I have been involved in the punk scene since 1978 and this book really captures the art, the energy and the feelings of punk. No book could cover everything but I swear this book has fliers from every significant band and scene in it. I especially enjoyed the short articles and poems from punks in each scene. If you are interested at all buy this book.

An absolutely gorgeous book. Even if you don't [care] about punk rock, it would still be fascinating. This is also an exceptional historical document. The history of the margins is lost so easily -- a book like this does a tremendous service to posterity. As to the guy from SF who says that this book distorts history and gives "unnatural significance to marginal bands..." Well, it probably does, and so what??!! [....]

This review is from: Fucked Up + Photocopied: Instant Art Of The Punk Rock Movement (Hardcover)
This artbook art does an admirable job of recapturing the spontaneity, dark humor and angst of a little known American DIY music scene: the punk rock underground of the late 70's and early 80's. For those unfamiliar with this type of free form art/social commentary/teen angst, this book will be a real eye opener. For those who eagerly awaited the next flier to appear on their local telephone pole directing them to the next Black Flag gig, this is one wickedly twisted stroll down memory lane. The only criticism is the scarcity of fliers from parts of the country outside the east and west coasts. However, fans of Raymond Pettibone's amazing art will be pleased to revisit his early work. An added bonus is the written commentary by local scenesters and musicians who were there when these fliers first appeared. This is juxtaposed by the merciful lack of pompous art historical/criticism blather. Props to the editors/designers who put the whole thing together: the overall layout and design mirrors the art presented: immediate, spontaneous and in your face.

Flyers, always cool,

This review is from: Fucked Up & Photocopied: Instant Art of the Punk Rock Movement (Paperback)
I'm not quite sure how the publisher afforded to print massive hardcover editions of what is essentially a collection of flyers, but i am thankful he did. I love flyers-- they are little pieces of history and art. The layout was unnecessarily jumbled and weird for no reasons many times. Plus the quotes from some punk/hardcore luminaries was uninspiring a best. But who cares ... the book is cool.

Punk's Not Dead,
This review is from: Fucked Up + Photocopied: Instant Art Of The Punk Rock Movement (Hardcover)
Yeah, the statement is cliche now but this book proves that it once thrived all by itself without the help of media darlings like Blink-182, et. al. who survive only by virtue of the MTV generation. I was especially pleased to see venues local to me displaying their names proudly on fliers, signs that something more real than burnt out Silicon Valley culture once existed in the Bay Area. This book is worth every penny both for those who were there and those who wish they were.

An art book that doesn't get eaten alive by its art direction, a self-guided tour of the artistic self promotion of the punk rock era. Kudos to the art director, John Susoeff, for not getting carried and burying the true stars of this book: The flyers. Brilliant.

comprehenive collection of American punk flyer art,
This review is from: Fucked Up + Photocopied: Instant Art Of The Punk Rock Movement (Hardcover)
I'm pleased that Bryan Ray Turcotte and his cohorts managed to preserve and resurrect the sometimes annoying, sometimes stunning epehemal art of the 70s-80s punk scene. This is a nicely-packaged collection of the era's most exciting do-it-youself graphics.

This is a fantastic, hard-bound piece of punk history... the layout is full color and gorgeous. All the scrappy bits of punk history in the form of flyers and playbills, arranged in a truly punk fashion, lacking repetition and never boring.... this is the quintessential punk coffee table book! And incredibly cheap, too. Get one before they're all gone!!!
