Editorial Reviews

Donald Byrd used the 9 inch 'pocket trumpet' for his 1959 release Fuego. Personally writing all six of the original compositions for this album, a tight band of New York monsters were gathered; especially Jackie McLean whose alto brought balance to the unique high timbre of Byrds minute horn. The great Duke Pearsons piano fills in admirably as does the highly underrated bass playing of Doug Watkins. Lex Humphries holds it altogether with his impeccable timekeeping. This reissue was mastered and cut from the original analog master tapes on Classics all tube mono cutting system and featuring authentic tip on jackets with film laminate front covers. --This text refers to an out of print or unavailable edition of this title.

4.0 out of 5 stars Grooving Hard-Bop, nice tunes and solos, November 6, 2001

Some of the best recorded music of the late fifties happened, when Donald Byrd and Jackie McLean were playing together. They really formed a great team, each of them plays as a sideman on the other one's recording dates, so imagine, if you might do a blindfold-test, it would be quite hard to guess, who of them is the leader. Donald Byrd wrote beautiful swinging tunes for this album and everybody plays great, so hard-bop fans will really enjoy that.

5.0 out of 5 stars Music for all ages, January 6, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Fuego (Audio CD)
The musicians play flawlessly. The tunes are unforgettable. You will find yourself humming the themes long after the cd is back on the rack. This is the type of Jazz that makes you want more. If you find someone that was turned off by avant-garde jazz and says that they can't listen to Jazz, play this cd for them and watch them convert into a jazz enthusiast. The music is simply beautiful!
