About the Artist

SONORA PONCEÑA

Paying tribute to its native city, this band first hit the scene in Ponce, Puerto Rico. This is also where the band got the name known around the world, "La Sonora Ponceña." La Sonora Ponceña's fame and success are due largely to the contributions of Papo Lucca Jr., who took the band over from his father, Don Quique Lucca. Papo "Lucca" Jr., a consummate musician and arranger, would make varied, significant and important contributions to the band, such as experimenting with a totally new fusion of modern Cuban styles and jazz. The band gained fame in 1960 while traveling to New York to give a series of performances in which the group cemented its position as one of the most highly demanded bands among Hispanic fans. The success of the band's first album was the preamble to a total of 32 albums, which have stood out for not only their content, but for the artwork on the covers, which have been considered veritable works of art that reaffirmed the band's leadership from the very beginning. Sonora Ponceña's staying power over the years is evidenced by the unwavering acceptance of its fans, who continue to demand the band's music and attend its countless concerts in various arenas.

5.0 out of 5 stars This Album is a Classic for a Reason! November 19, 2009
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
La Sonora Ponceña really did an excellent job on this album, which features some of the more recognizable tracks by the band and the stunning vocals of Tito Gomez. This album features excellent piano playing, excellent themes, and a great energy that pervades all musical elements of the songs, which are of the highest quality. This is definitely an album to get if you're interested in exploring the world of salsa or if you are seeking an album with familiar tunes and maybe unfamiliar hidden treasures.

5.0 out of 5 stars Early classic by this great band! July 21, 2008

Here we have an early Poncena album. It's nothing like the 80's and 90's band some of you may have heard. Here the sound is raw and "in your face." -and that's how I like it!
It swings all the way through. It's essential in your hard salsa collection.
Good remastering, considering that it's probably ripped from a record and cleaned with noise reduction software. Good liner notes!

5.0 out of 5 stars An ageless Salsa classic. August 18, 2013
Format:Audio CD
This classic album was the one that truly put Sonora Poncena on the map as a force to be reckoned with in the Salsa world. Its title track was such a huge hit that the band would re-record it in 1985 (for their "Jubilee" album) and it still remains a staple of Sonora Poncena's live shows to this very day. "Sancocho Prieto", "Nosotros" and "Aprendi Mas Que Tu" were also major hits from this album which remains an excellent example of why Sonora Poncena is universally revered as one of the Salsa genre's greatest institutions. Interestingly enough, this was one of the last albums released on Inca Records prior to its acquisition by Jerry Masucci's then-ever-expanding Fania Records empire. Enjoy!
