Phish is a phenomenal band that has my soul tethered to whatever it is that they do. They led me to music, and really myself. This album is more "poppy" than any other album I've heard. Having said that, I have to say that for the most part there is no regret in me that this is their newest album. They are the masters at seamlessly interweaving different genres of music, and the album Fuego is just another style to add to their list of tricks. I've seen these songs performed already in Atlantic City, ( Christie is guilty ) and those of us who are smart enough to know, already know, that ANY Phish song, could be the best thing you've EVER heard, LIVE, depending on their mood, and the energy the crowd is giving. ( Possibly what you're on COULD play a factor too, but not necessarily ) Other than the beauty of the studio, and vocal modifications done at the hands of genius,' Fuego blends many different genres into this album. We get funk, motown/R&B and horns, blaring, eerie, almost haunted solos of victorious proportions. My hats ALWAYS off to their expertise, and handling of the ship they maintain. I have every studio album they've ever made, and all their side projects albums. There is nothing about this band that is new to me, except their renewed spirit of adventure, humor, style, and ability to blow me away. My life is SOOO much better for having experienced this band, on this planet, and I'm forever grateful for EVERYTHING they've offered me. I've known nothing deeper than their music in all my walks of life. They complete the wheel for me, b/c I NEED music, and they take me to SO many levels in the psyche. Magicians of Sound.
What has always perplexed me is that whenever they compile a list of the all-time best guitarists, why is Trey Anastasio never listed ? His solos are amazing. In my book, he's just as good as Clapton, Page and Beck. In fact, the only guitarist I would put above him is Hendrix. Why doesn't he get the credit he deserves ??
Needless to say, along with Springsteen and The Who, Phish is one of the all-time best live bands. Every show and every set is a surprise and a delight.
mainly because he's a jamband guitarist, like garcia and to an extent zappa, guitarists who play in many diverse styles and/or in as loose of an improvisatory framework as jambands do, they make their diversity part of their style so are often seen as noodling "jacks of all trades, masters of none" in a diluted less defined genre (jamband). So they will not get the recog a genre specialist gets...those in jazz, metal, blues, country, etc, even rockbands. Phish is too diverse to showcase any one narrow style to specialize in...the only thing they specialize in is not playing specialist music.
