This review is from: Fuel Up!: A Girl's Guide to Eating Well (Girls' Guides) (Library Binding)
Fuel Up!: A Girl's Guide to Eating Well provides much more than simple nutrition tips . It is a middle school girl's guide through the physical and social changes that they are likely to encounter. The book offers honest and easy to follow guidelines to eating and staying healthy. It includes and explains the food pyramid, and is loaded with fun food myths and facts, and side notes. A sample daily diet and exercise plan, healthy alternatives to junk food, and frank advice about when junk food is ok, are also included; The diet quiz is akin to those found in teen magazines. The author notes that there are no bad foods, just bad diets; photographs depict tween-age girls making healthy food choices. The graphics and clip-art style illustrations also add interest, but not much. The layout includes a large, readable font and pictures, sidebars and headings enough to be an inviting read. The style is a cross between a magazine and a textbook. Though the book includes and index, bibliography, and glossary, its lack of scientific terminology and explanation keeps it from being a respectable reference source. However, its upbeat graphics, language and layout make it a suitable introduction to health, nutrition, and body changes for teen girls.
