4.0 out of 5 stars Does what it is supposed to do, April 12, 2009
Why would someone buy this?

There are essentially four courses of action a runner can take:

- Don't hydrate at all during long runs, but this could lead to heat exhaustion and is not a smart move. I can easily can lose 3-4 pounds of sweat running 10 miles.

- Drive to the halfway point and leave a bottle of water, drive back to the starting point, then begin the run. Hopefully, the bottle will still be there and not tampered with by a passer-by or animals. Driving out there is inconvenient too.

- A runner could leave three or four small water bottles on his/her mailbox and pass by every 4 miles or so to pick up a fresh bottle. I tried this and have actually talked myself out of finishing the remainder of the run. I'd much rather only see my house at the beginning and end of the run.

- Buy a belt like this which enables the runner to plan a long route away from home and always have water handy.

Why did I buy the 6-bottle version?

I bought a 6-bottle belt because it was only $6 more than the 2-bottle belt. Each bottle holds 8 ounces of liquid and if I decide I only need 16 ounces, I don't have to load up all 6 bottles. Then again, if I am planning a long run I can load up completely. Obviously this isn't needed at an official run where water stations are available, but this belt is great for training in local areas.

How well did I like it?

Fully loaded, the belt probably weighs close to 4 pounds which is intimidating when you first put it on before a 10+ mile run. My initial thought was, "There is no way I am going to be able to lug this the entire run!" The belt is fastened using Velcro and fit perfectly. It didn't jostle or bother my stride at all. After the 2nd mile or so I really didn't notice the extra weight anymore.

The bottles are easy to remove while running, although I had to use two hands to put a bottle back in its holder. This was my first time running with the belt so maybe I will become more adept at it, but it still only took a second or two using two hands. Hardly anything to slow me down.

The belt has a small zippered pouch which can hold a driver's license (ID), gel packs, or keys. The one thing I wish the belt had were reflective patches on the rear side of the belt so cars from behind can see me better in the dark. I wear reflective gear anyway, but I think this would be a cheap improvement to make.

The bottle and caps are plastic and I can already see how it would be easy to strip the thread inside the cap if you are not careful screwing it on. Also, make sure the tops are firmly pressed down and not popped open for drinking while running. These two problems could cause leakage while running, which I have read on another review.

Also, drink from a different bottle each time. One would think drinking the whole 8 ounces from one bottle first, then another from the opposite side would be fine. I was able to tell one side was heavier than the other when I did that at first. It may be only an 8 ounce difference, but it is noticeable.

PROS: Great way to carry water with you during long runs. Pouch is big enough for most ID cards, gel packs, and keys. Bottles easy to get to and belt's Velcro ensures the belt has a snug fit. Replacement bottles available for sale.

CONS: Bottle caps are made of plastic and can be easily stripped if not screwed on carefully. Wish it had reflective material in the back of the belt.

I showed this to my brother-in-law who is also a runner and I would recommend it to anyone else as well.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fuel belt, May 2, 2008

The Fuel Belt seems great, except that it is a Profile Design belt (by Fuel Belt). It was not exactly as described or pictured...but, there were only subtle differences. The water bottles are nicely distributed around the belt. With the 6 flask belt, there is plenty of water for long runs. My only word of warning is that it is really small (smaller than the measurements listed), if you are on the edge of sizes, get the bigger one. It is made of elastic and it has a Velcro closure, so it fits even if it is a bit small or a bit big.

This review is from: FuelBelt 6 Bottle Belt (Sports)
This fuel belt works great, weight distribution very nice - can put sports drinks in some bottles and water in the other so that you have a variety on a long haul. The only time I had a little chafing was on 20+ miles. My main concern before purchase was that it would constrict on the abs during the run causing stomach irritation - however, this was not the case as is with my Camelbak.
