3.0 out of 5 stars Academic Infiltration?, August 24, 2008
This review is from: Fuhrer's Heart: AN AMERICAN STORY (Paperback)
Fuhrer's Heart: An American Story by James D. Ward has all the components for a thrilling, suspenseful story. Set in academia in the 1980s, the story touches on Affirmative Action, tenure and the changes going on within the African-American world of PhDs. Micheal Woods has a fresh new PhD in his hands and is being heavily recruited by colleges across the country. Michael chooses to accept a job at Orleans University in New Orleans. He is pleased by all the perks and the unusually high salary. What he does not know is that the perks come with a price. Everyone at Orleans is not happy to see him arrive on campus. Not much time will pass before he discovers that all that glitters is not necessarily gold.

Fuhrer's Heart tells a story of a young professor's fight not just for his career, but for his very life. There is murder, mayhem, backstabbing and an infiltration of a ruthless white supremacist organization. What stops the novel from being an on-the-edge of your seat page-turner is the pacing and how the novel within the span of a sentence can cover a range of months. With more development and back-story information the novel has the potential to be a thriller. Even with that, I recommend, Fuhrer's Heart: An American Story, to those readers who enjoy spare, narrative-driven storytelling.
