This lens is much like the other two Fuji primes, sharp, contrasty and wonderful. The focus speed, however, is abysmally slow. I have found myself focusing it manually until it is really close and then, and only then, initiating the autofocus. Otherwise you wait an interminable length of time for it to go from infinitely close to infinitely far away.

But for its intended use as a macro product where you are more likely to focus it by placement or fine movement, the autofocus is an afterthought. The beauty of the images overpowers any such criticism.

(My last review of this lens discussed a lens that produces solid image quality marred with a slow auto and manual focus, however, the focus issues have been fixed by a firmware update.)

Look and feel: this portrait angle lens is a relatively small low profile that fits well in proportion with the x-pro1 body. The lens hood is quite large and doubles its lens length. Lens and hood (!) is all metal in construction.

Operation: The firmware released late September 2012 improved the function of the lens greatly bringing up the speed of manual and autofocus. Hunting can still occur when contrast focus misses, but those 10 seconds of hunting has been drastically cut down to what feels like ~3 seconds. Manual focus is fast and now quite usable.

Usage of EVF is recommended as opposed to the usage of OVF for purpose of confirming focus on subjects.

Recommended.

I bought this lens about a year ago. At first I didn't like how it coupled with the XPRO 1 since most of the photos were nothing special, it was slow, and the focus sometimes missed the subject. But after the update, its a whole different lens. Its quicker and more precise. The colors are saturated and amazing. I love the shots of flowers and plants and while I had toyed with the idea of selling the leans a few months ago, now I wouldn't dream of it. Its definitely a speciality lens and more limited than some of the others in the line up, but its a great lens if you like photographing flora. Its not a true macro in the scientific sense but you can get interesting macro shots with it.

WOW...fuji is making some great lenses. I was going to hold off and get the (probably) more expensive 56mm f 1.2 lens coming out later this year or next Spring...but this lens has some pretty great reviews and for probably a lot less money. Totally satisfied.

Excellent bright lens for flower closeup and portrait shots. Teamed with the 14 mm and 18-55 mm lenses is all I need.

This macro lens takes very sharp pictures and on a tripod and fully stopped down I get fantastic deep-field of view that is tack sharp throughout the field of view.

The problem with this lens is the autofocus "hunting" it does when trying to find its focus point--sometimes the lens just gives up and one is left with a blinking red square of failure :(

This is true on both the EX-1 another Fuji I have (can't remember the model). On either camera I get this "hunting problem" and I have updated both the cameras and the lens' firmware. This review is given January 2014 for reference to future readers in case the firmware is updated in the future and Fuji is able to fix this problem.

I use a Leica as my main camera but I love my Fuji cameras and for the price there is no beating them. My teenage son and I go on "photo trips" and on those he uses the Fuji and I use a Leica. As a manual-focus guy I generally operate all of my cameras in manual-focus mode, but my son uses autofocus only. The autofocus hunting problem on this lens frustrates him to the point that he won't tolerate using it. He uses a 35mm f/1.4 Fuji instead--fastest XF mount lens that exists today and crystal sharp in its comparatively narrow field of view.

Short answer: I love the lens--be aware of the autofocus hunting.

Like a shallow depth of field no matter the f stop? This lens is for you. Granted there are many factors for getting a smooth creamy background but this lens, for me, seems to always give the smooth out-of-focus background. It's touted as a portrait lens but works great for landscape, cityscape, and street photography at a distance. It's a mid range prime. I like utilizing the zoom function, i.e., moving my feet. It forces one to think and pre-visualize. All good points.

Great once you update to newest firmware. X-e2 focuses fast and accurate. I shot motorcycles doing jumps at the circus and it never missed a shot. Can take great macro shots too.
