Review summary from DPReview

DPReview: Fujifilm X-T1 at a Fashion Shoot
DPReview Gold Award April 2014
Overall, the X-T1 combines a hugely engaging control setup with a superb viewfinder, excellent image quality, one of the best AF systems in a mirrorless camera, and a pretty compelling selection of lenses to choose from.
Andy Westlake Andy Westlake Jeff Keller Jeff Keller

The X-T1 is probably Fujifilm's best camera to date, offering a compelling combination of intuitive handling, excellent image quality, and one of best electronic viewfinders we've seen. It also features one of the most impressive autofocus systems on any camera at this price level, both in terms of accuracy with fast lenses and tracking moving subjects. Over all it's a hugely engaging and capable camera, and one that's fundamentally a joy to use.

Reasons to buy

  • Dials and switches provide engaging shooting experience
  • Excellent image quality at low and high ISOs
  • Impressive continuous autofocus with large buffer
  • Superb, huge high resolution electronic viewfinder
  • Solid, robust-feeling, dust-and splash-proof

Things to consider

  • Rear buttons are small, and almost flush to camera body
  • Awkwardly positioned, locking ISO dial is inconvenient
  • Four-way controller is rather 'spongey' in feel
  • Limited manual control during video recording
  • Poor image quality in Movie mode

Suggested for

Enthusiast photographers looking for a highly capable system camera that's more portable than an SLR setup

Not suggested for

Videography, or action photography in fast-changing lighting situations

From the Manufacturer

A premium interchangeable lens camera, the X-T1 features evolved SLR-style handling, mechanical dials and weather-resistance multi mode viewfinder (when paired with a weather resistant X mount lens), together with all the benefits of an X-Series camera, such as compact size, excellent mobility and high-speed performance.

Advanced features

The world's largest* and fastest** multi mode viewfinder

With its high-resolution 2.36 million dot OLED display, and the world's highest magnification ratio of 0.77x*, the FUJIFILM X-T1's Real Time Viewfinder allows a true connection to your subject and a purely immersive shooting experience. The viewfinder achieves a wide angle of view of 31°, and with the display's lag time of just 0.005 sec — less that a tenth of conventional cameras — you'll immediately see any changes to your composition, keeping you in touch with whatever you're shooting. ** As of January 2014.

Maximizing the power of APS-C-sized X-Trans CMOS II sensor

The FUJIFILM X-T1's large APS-C-sized 16M X-Trans CMOS II sensor features an original color filter array with a highly random pattern that minimizes moire and color aberrations, eliminating the need for an optical low-pass filter (OLPF). The result is image quality that rivals a full-frame sensor.

1: Microlenses

2: X-trans color filter

3: L/R light interception filter

4: Phase detection sensor / green filterpixel

5: Photodiode

Capture the thrill of motion with predictive AF and AF track

Faster response means more confidence in capturing the moment, and the FUJIFILM X-T1 delivers it. Using phase-detection autofocus, combined with high-speed subject predictive, the AF accurately follows your subject through the frame, even at the highest continuous shooting speed of 8.0 frames/sec.

Practical features

Weather resistant - dust-resistant, water-resistant and -10°C low-temp operation

The weather resistant structure is sealed in approximately 80 places and is both dust and water resistant. Additionally it is designed to cope in temperatures as low as -10°C allowing field photography without the typical worries about the weather, season or general shooting environment.

When used in conjunction with the XF18-135mm, XF16-55mm F2.8 or XF50-140mm F2.8 and Vertical Battery Grip VG-XT1, which have the same sealing structure as the camera body, the camera offers a reliable system for your field photography in damp conditions.

Film simulation — adding impact and depth to photos.

80 years of photo film research adds up to color reproduction that's second to none. Over decades of film manufacture Fujifilm has perfected the skill of color reproduction and it lives on in the FUJIFILM X-T1. Pleasing skin tones, natural blues and greens, and the ability to perfectly record the diversity of white balance conditions throughout the day are all taken in the camera's stride, and it also boasts a wide dynamic range for better reproduction of detail. With Film Simulation, you can choose from classic Fujifilm photo styles, and give your pictures varied color and tone to suit the subject, just like pros did with film. There's standard PROVIA, vivid Velvia, and ASTIA with its true-to-life skin tones; PRO Neg.Std and PRO Neg.Hi, which are portrait modes based on professional color negative film; and Monochrome expression with three different filter effects as well as Sepia.

A new choice, classic chrome

A sixth choice has been added to Film Simulation, which gives a unique luster and depth to photos; Classic Chrome. Classic Chrome was inspired by feedback and requests from X Series photographers and its look is inspired by printed images in magazines from the glory days of photo journalism, rather than a specific film type.

With slightly muted tones and deep color reproduction, it's a clear departure from the existing five types.

Rather than a pure record of the scene, Classic Chrome offers photographers a more expressive, and artistic look to their shots.

High-speed 1/32,000sec electronic shutter

When using lenses with very wide apertures, like the Fujinon XF35mmF1.4 R and the XF56mmF1.2 R, it's possible to acheive a very shallow depth-of-field and beautiful bokeh along with a sharp subject. However, when using these wide apertures in very bright light, like on a sunny day, shutter speed can limit shooting options and mean the widest aperture settings are unavailable. To fix this, the FUJIFILM X-T1 Graphite Silver Edition now includes an electronic shutter mode with a top speed of 1/32000 sec, meaning you can use wide apertures more easily than ever before.

Adaptable Live View Mode is ready for anything

One of the great benefits of an electronic viewfinder is that what you see is what you get'; the final image is displayed in real-time so any Film Simulation modes or other effects can be checked while shooting. But users sometimes need to see colors close to how they're viewed with an optical finder, or to focus on shadow detail, which some high-contrast effects block out. To aid this, the Natural Live View function has been added and, when 'PREVIEW PIC. EFFECT' is turned Off in the menu, an image close to the naked eye is displayed during live view. 11 adaptable vividness levels guarantee the perfect view. Whether it's through a viewfinder, on an LCD screen, or with the naked eye, we all see color differently, so to ensure that users get the perfect view, vividness of the image displayed can now be adjusted through 11 levels, from -5 to +5. This function can be controlled separately for the electronic viewfinder and the LCD monitor, so it remains totally effective no matter what the lighting conditions or shooting style.

Ready for every situation, FUJIFILM X-T1 has a complete lineup of accessories

Vertical grip : VG-XT1, included flash : EF-X8, hand grip : MHG-XT and leather case : BLC-XT1.

Made In Japan

'Made in Japan' Quality

Everything within the FUJIFILM X-T1's design and production process has been aimed at creating a precision instrument, so you can be sure of quality and performance that's worthy of the 'X' name. And with an eye on its use in challenging environments it's a tough companion, too.

FUJIFILM Camera Remote

With the new dedicated 'Fujifilm Camera Remote' application, you can focus and trigger the camera release from your smartphone or tablet. The app not only lets you adjust focus, but also control settings like shutter speed, aperture, exposure compensation and ISO sensitivity. You can even apply other settings like Film Simulation, self-timer, and flash while 'Touch AF' lets you focus from your phone or tablet, too. Imagine all the situations where this smart assistant will come in handy! Take commemorative group photos with yourself in the shot, capture wildlife photos, or remotely release the shutter for night shots free from camera shake. The photographic possibilities are endless.

In-camera RAW Converter

The built-in raw data converter lets you view and edit your results without the need for your PC. The conversion of RAW data not only takes into account exposure compensation, white balance and other in-camera image quality control settings, but also lets you apply Film Simulation modes in the converter mode.

Full HD

Full HD Movie Mode

Full HD Movie (1920x1080) mode offers not only the standard 30 fps but also 60, 25 & 24 fps. You can also take advantage of Monochrome and the classic color effects of other Film Simulation modes, putting your own signature on every clip you shoot. Twin the exceptional brightness of an X mount lens and the FUJIFILM X-T1's large sensor and you'll be shooting movies with professional-looking, shallow depth-of-field effects. Connect the external MIC-ST1 stereo microphone (sold separately) to record high-quality audio and add depth to your movies, too.

Just fantastic. If you're looking at this camera then you've probably already done tons of research, so I'll just leave bullet points. I've only had this for 4 days, but have spent about 35 hours with it by now and feel like I know it pretty well!

Pros -

- It's TINY. I was expecting it to be bigger, but it's barely bigger than the X-E1/X-E2.
- Fits in the hand beautifully. Fuji have put a rubber "nub" on the rear top right corner, and it's perfect for one-handed shooting.
- The knobs on top are great, everything is intuitive. I actually bought the Nikon Df in December and returned it after a couple of weeks, it never became intuitive. The only thing I would change is not having to press the button in when changing ISO every time.
- Rear screen is big and bright. Seen many comments saying it should be a touchscreen (it shouldn't) and it should flip sideways (it shouldn't) - touchscreens should stay far, far away from cameras!
- Build quality is ace. Feels rock solid, but weighs practically nothing.
- SD card slot is on the side, helps with not having to take off tripod to change card.
- OHMYGOODNESS THE EVF! I've never been a fan of EVFs, but this is incredible. The first day I shot with it, I loved it, but I knew I needed to wait until shooting at night until I got the full picture - it was fantastic. Helped me see things in the dark that I never would with an OVF, it's going to change the way I shoot night photography. Being able to see exposure and WB changes in the viewfinder before shooting is fantastic - and the auto-rotation when shooting vertical is genius.

Cons -

- the buttons are just a tiny bit TOO indented on the rear of the camera.

I wont bother with image quality, it is the same as the XE-2, basically the same as the Xpro-1. This is a hit or miss with some people, i wont waste any time as this is not what makes this camera unique in Fuji's lineup. Read any Fuji X-trans review for image quality. All I will say is it is top notch.

I have been shooting with the XE-1 and OMD EM-5 for the last year or so. I primarily do timelapse photography which is comparable to landscape photography, also studio plant timelapse and macro work. General photography is a hobby of mine. I am not a professional photographer but do use photography professionally, if that makes sense. I moved from Nikon pro gear to mirrorless cameras to save weight for extended hikes to remote areas.

the XT-1 is about as perfect as a camera (for my purposes) as i have ever found, it certainly sets a new bench mark.

I doubt I will be using my XE-1 much at all for general photography. I have had this love hate relationship between the OMD and the XE-1. I liked the output of the XE-1, but found the AF to be terrible, the EVF was decent, but nothing to scream about. Everything the XE-1 did poorly the OMD excelled at, everything the OMD fell short in the XE-1 excelled in.

The XT-1 is so much faster in operation than the XE-1. the AF is very fast, it seems to be very accurate. Compared to any other mirrorless camera on the market the AF-C tracks like a bloodhound. Which to say it is about as good as a prosumer level DSLR. The viewfinder is not only usable, it is darn good.

I think the XT-1's EVF is probably the first one that really starts to threaten the OVF. Looking through this one, I would suspect the EVF is only 2 maybe 3 small generations to outperforming an OVF in every way imaginable.

Having had many a pro DSLR camera body and lenses as well as a complete Micro 4/3rd system over the last 5 years (EM1 Olympus) I fully understand the compromises that can come from a "non" DSLR system. Slower focus, lessor color depth, slower shooting ability, poorer build quality, and the list goes on
Now having said that I sold ALL my camera gear off in the anticipation of this camera and lens system. I researched till I could no longer find a competent review and photo taken with this amazing X-Trans sensor. After a week of ownership I can say without hesitation THIS is the camera that will set some benchmarks after time. The Sony A7's get their accolades, but the Fuji's present something "different" intrinsic to the photographic picture. A nearly 3D look to their files that can hardly be explained. Their colors are simply yummy and are so pleasant to see. The files are also virtually devoid of ANY sensor noise or artifacts. Sony has noise reduction built in and compression you can NOT turn off. The Micro 4/3rd bodies unfortunately possess noise at ALL ISO sensitivities. This camera I can shoot right up to ISO6400 and see nearly NOTHING noise oriented 100% on screen. There is NO noise or artifacts in the blue sky shots.

Moving along to the other aspects that are amazing. This camera is fully capable of 8fps while focusing continuously. And frankly having owned a venerable D700 full frame Nikon, this camera will keep right up with it in the tracking arena. Even just spur of the moment mashing of the shutter button will render you an IN focus shot, so being spontaneous is rewarded. The build is rock solid and the switches are very tight and are not likely to be mistakenly moved.
