4.0 out of 5 stars Lifebook A1120, March 10, 2009
This review is from: Fujitsu FPCW33255 A1120 Lifebook 15.6" Notebook PC (Personal Computers)
Over the weekend I bought this computer at Fry's. The $100 manufacturer's rebate definately affected my decision making. That makes my Core 2 / 4 GB machine only $699. Here on Amazon I noticed J&R has it for [...] so with the manufacturer's rebate...WOW!
The machine is fast. Set-up was fairly easy. The wi-fi found my home and office networks with no problem, my flash drives and printer were also easily found by the computer and worked the first time with no extra time spent finding drivers and trouble shooting online.
This laptop is definatly lighter weight than my old one,(a 5 year old Toshiba Satellite), but is kind of "boxy" in design. It's quiet, which is nice. The monitor is awesome- great color and contrast. One of the other big selling points for me was the heavy duty construction of this machine and the metal hinges that connect the monitor to the body. The keys have good "spring back". It gets hot to the right of the track pad - right were you have your hand while you type. Another annoying thing is that the screen is significantly dimmer when you are not plugged into the external power. I haven't tried the web cam yet or the mic. I read the literature on using the machine for multi-media with a TV tuner and fm radio tuner. I don't use my computer that way, but it sounds interesting. I'm still not really sure how difficult it would be to hook-up that way or what extra parts/expenses there would be.
60 day trial software for Norton security and MS Office are included. Also includes Works, some Cyberclick software, Arcsoft web cam and Roxio.
All-in-all a good, fast machine that I'm hoping will last for several years.
Oh yeah...one more thing, it comes with a metal clip on lid top. Mine is a green labrynth design. Outside of my "paying the bills" job I'm an artist, so I'm going to do a little "re-make" of the lid and personalize it. Kind of nice to be able to personalize it - and be able to go back to the plain black when I'm in a business situation.

4.0 out of 5 stars competitively priced and generally a decent buy, April 3, 2009

Having compared Fujitsu A1120 with HP notebook computers with similar specs, I decided to buy this for its competive pricing and spill-resistant keyboard. If you need/want HDMI output, then pick HP, because Fujitsu does not offer it.

There are a couple of things that I am concern about, however.

First, internet connection would frequently get lost, even though it shows that the Fujitsu is still connected to my Apple network (Extreme Base Station). When internet connection is suddenly lost, I disconnect then reconnect to my Apple network. This is a pain when during Netflix viewing, I'd have to reconnect several times. I'm not sure if it's Apple's network issue or Fujitsu's. Since my iMac and Mac Mini do not suffer from this intermittent lost of internet, I can only suspect Vista or Fujisu as the culprit.

Second, the CPU fans kicks on and off a bit too frequently. To reduce this, I set the "power plan" to "balanced" or "power saver", which seems to result in less fan on/off cycling.

There is bluetooth feature with this Fujitsu. However, there seems to be no advertisement for it. I do like bluetooth and wirelss N features. Fujitsu makes reliable machines. I sure hope this machine will serve me as long as my old Dell.
