Product Description

The Fujitsu ScanSnap SV600

For smooth operation in overhead scanning, the Fujitsu ScanSnap SV600 is enhanced with new customized features while continuing the ScanSnap concept of "Simple, Fast, and Compact." Scan newspapers, magazines, or books directly without cutting or damaging them. Save time and effort, and make it an easy job by scanning not only books or magazines but all types of content restrained in binders, spirals, folders, or clear sleeves. Just flip the page and scan. The ScanSnap SV600 scans business cards to large A3 size (double-letter) documents. And with the included ScanSnap Organizer, CardMinder and Rack2-Filer Smart software, keeping scanned content organized and accessible is a "Snap."

Versatile Imaging (VI) Technologies

Some things can't be scanned through a feeder so ScanSnap SV600 operates by taking an elevated view. Combining high quality CCD optics and advanced LED illumination, ScanSnap SV600 uses advanced capture technologies to maximize field of depth and minimize unevenness page after page. ScanSnap SV600 breaks free from typical flatbed limitations by scanning content larger than just letter size. Simply position the document on the A3 scan mat and press scan.

Quick Menu Saves Time

The Quick Menu pops up after scanning to allow users a fast and productive way to store, share or transform their scanned data either on the computer, or into a favorite cloud service, like Evernote or Dropbox.

Multiple Document Detection

With an advanced cropping and orientation technology built-in, ScanSnap SV600 can scan several business cards, photos, newspaper clippings, and other documents at one time.

Performance Matters

With the touch of the power button, ScanSnap SV600 is ready to scan. And with each touch, a large A3 dimension scan area is captured in less than 3 seconds. Combined with intelligent image correction, page turning detection, and features like Timed Mode and Auto Book Correction, great results are just a button push away.

Fujitsu ScanSnap SV600
Included Rack2-Filer and Magic Desktop software makes organization easy.

Let me start by saying that I am an archivist, and have been accused of having a 'paper fetish' :)
As a 30+ yr Genealogist, bookbinder in training, and collector of early Radio documentation, I have BOXES of paper stored, and every possible bookshelf is crammed in my 11 bookcases!

Starting in the 90's my goal was to digitize my collections. This used to take SO long on my flatbed scanner, and it was riddled with problems. (e.g. folding printed matter to fit the scan area, closing the lid enough that it doesn't create 'light shadows' etc.). I used to spend as much time editing as I did scanning, and scanning took 1-2 days effort per book, etc. Ugh.

With the SV600, I dreamed of a workflow where my piles of paper were SEARCHABLE, and my office was clean!

Out of the box, it was clear that this wasn't a 'hobby' scanner. Its for libraries, or specialists needing 'contact free' scanning.
The SC600 is built like a tank, though you will need to be very careful to follow the instructions on moving the scanner (NEVER pick it up by the movable scanning head!). It comes with a nice neoprene mat that snugs around the base of the unit, and has useful markings on it to center and judge size. Software included MUST be installed before connecting and powering on the unit, or you may get the device confused when it's discovered by your computer.

Software included is: ScanSnap Manager, ScanSnap Organizer, Magic Desktop, Rack-2-Filer, and Adobe Acrobat Standard XI (1 user bundle)

There are a couple of things that really stand out about the software from Fujitsu (not Adobe). Its 'first generation' tools that have a bit of 'engrish' around the edges, and I cant say the help file is great. You will figure out the workflow pretty fast though.

This scanner is really neat. After watching the promotional videos on YouTube and reading the customer feedback, I decided to purchase an SV600. I planned on using it to copy old photos, newspapers, documents and books.

Not long after I received the scanner, I immediately began to realize some of its shortcomings for my intended use:

1. Wrinkled pages = no go!
If your documents are not completely flat, the resulting image or text will be distorted. Since the scanner scans at an angle, any imperfection on the page surface will really stand out. A sheet of non-reflective glass will help flatten the page and help obtain a higher quality scan.

2. Quality of Photos = 1-2 megapixel range.
I was planning on using the scanner to scan historic photographs, but the resulting images were somewhat blotchy when enlarged. A traditional flatbed scanner or high megapixel camera is still the best at copying photos.

3. Scanning Books = lots of time!
If your book pages are completely flat with perfect edges, then you will be able to scan a book in no time. However, if your book is older or has more of a curve issue, be prepared to spend some time editing and fixing the scans. I had to use sheets of non-reflective glass in order to get higher quality scans. The bundled software does a pretty good job at straightening the pages, but you will invariably get some skewed pages out of the blue.

This high speed scanner does have it's place, and I would still recommend the SV600 to anyone needing to quickly digitize their documents. The best thing to do is spend some time experimenting with the software and settings.

I love this gadget! I started scanning one book, which took less than 30 minutes, and the results are great. I plan on scanning a book a day probably for the rest of my life and I'll be getting rid of my whole library! I was wondering when someone was going to come up with a device like this. Yes its very pricey, but this is a must have scanner for anyone wanting to digitize books.

I have been waiting for years for an inexpensive planetary scanner, and this is it. Works as advertized, and does it well. The problem is that because it is a consumer product, Fujitsu has moved from the assumption that they will guide the user from scan to final document with a couple of workflow patterns. With the scanning books function, you acquire the image, process it, create your pdf, perhaps correct it, and you are done. But wait, maybe you shouldn't be done. Perhaps you want to capture the images in one format, then perform another function with another software solution that is better, then use the Fujitsu software for .... forget it soldier. Follow the workflow and fight with the tools you have been given when you are prompted. When I tried to find the dewarp function in the software to process jpgs that I had captured earlier, I could not even find the function until I got with the program and turned them into pdfs, which I did not want to do. Someone with real technical skills could find workarounds, I am sure. I will use this to capture jpgs, forget about the book curvature software function included. It appears you cannot dewarp the book files in a batch, but rather one-by-one when scanned or when making a pdf afterwards. What a straightjacket. I will have to find user-empowered software solutions, but this is the hardware solution.
