More About the Author

Ian D. Smith was born in Glasgow in a working class family whose father was a Chief Engineer building and testing ship's engines around the world. Ian started making decisions fairly early on in life and by 12 had decided he would attend the private high school, Allen Glen's. A graduate of Strathclyde University and a Scottish Chartered accountant Ian moved to London at 23 to build a career in industry. A keen runner he was a Glasgow schools 800m champion, a UK national university medalist at 800m and a Scottish International athlete. An ambitious young man with a highly competitive spirit, he enjoyed early success in Thomson the publishing giant as a divisional CFO, culminating in the prestigious Young Accountant of Year Award at 28 awarded by the Observer Magazine. He went on to build two successful M&A advisory firms over the next 12 years, Livingstone Fisher and Capita Corporate Finance.
Over this period he completed dozens of transactions including the MBO of CentreWest, the first privatization of London Transport. In 2001 he moved to the US, returning to his operational roots to successfully turnaround an award winning IBM partner, Teamstudio achieving record profits. In 2009 he formed The Portfolio Partnership to open a new chapter in his career supplying interim 'C' level executives to facilitate the scaling of private businesses. Ian's family life is perhaps his proudest achievement. Married to Shona for 28 years, they have two beautiful daughters, Emily and Megan. Both are driven young ladies pointing to successful Legal and PR careers of their own. Ian and his family became US citizens in 2014. Ian still competes on the track and forms part of the 4x200m M55 National record holding relay squad.

Fulfilling The Potential of Your Business", book provides real, actionable advice every business owner can and should act upon. Doing so will increase profits and company value. I have seen too many companies going through the motions during good times, then wondering "what happened?" when tough times arrive (economy, new competition new regulation, etc). The straight forward advice on systems, sales, and operations will guide any business to become a better, or as Ian says, "remarkable" business.

Not only have I read the book but was fortunate enough to see Ian Smith speak in person. This is a valuable tool to anyone owning their own business, regardless of whether or not you are expanding, selling or just starting out as the valuable tools and insights can be applied to a business at any stage. I recommend this book highly and also urge you to attend a seminar if Ian is speaking.
