NECESSARY RECORDING,
By John E. Pioli (Easton, CT United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Full Collapse (Audio CD)
Okay, I've actually owned this for a while. I've seen them several times and met them all at least once. I also know this cd by heart. I'm not bragging.Let me explain. I am NOT one to easily proclaim my admiration for a band. It takes a lot to really impress me. And this album and this band never lets me down. THE SONGS: Possibly, it's worth this album for the lyrics alone. It's become all too common for lyrics to become personal in content, but Thursday take it a step beyond personal. They make you feel everything from glass in your hair to blood in your eyes. Even without the music, the lyrics hold their own, and, let's be honest, you can't say that about most bands in the last 10 years. HIGHLIGHTS: WARNING TO SOME OF YOU OTHER REVIEWERS: BOTTOM LINE:

A breathtaking adventure.,

Thursday's second release (Victory Records) is one of the best (if not the best) albums I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. I had heard 3 of their songs and decided it was worth a shot. Little did I know I would become addicted. The album is an addicting and mesmerizing coalition of emotions and energy. I saw Thursday live and words cannot express the presence they have on stage. The bad thing about this CD is that you cannot see them perform it all. If you ever have the chance to see this young and outstanding band perform, Carpe Diem. The opening track is a silent and haunting one, titled A0001, using plenty of effects and voices speaking over one another. "We'll all look the same someday, and even now the robot starts to think, I wonder what it dreams..." ending calmly (too soon, I thought, the track is beautiful, but is followed up at the closing by i1100 of the same nature) and exploding into an energy packed "Understanding In A Car Crash". This song seems to be the one favored by most, and I can see why. The cycle of emotion and flawlessness continues to the last tracks, Wind-Up (starting innocently and softly, then exploding with blazing guns to really move you) and How Long Is The Night?, yet another fantastic piece of art from this group of five. Do yourself a favor and buy this CD. It may be the best CD you will ever own (considering the next one is not better, or if you like Waiting better - also a fantastic album).

it just kept getting better,

I bought this CD based on the two tracks I had heard from radio/MTV- "Cross out the Eyes" and "understanding (in a car crash)" but quickly discovered that this album is rock solid top to bottom.Musically, Thursday seems to combine some relatively cliche elemets in a very refreshing manner- the product is a more grown up take on emo-core. The emo lyrics remain but are punctuated by screams that will, if played at proper volume, actually rip apart your speaker and slap you in the face. I dont pay much attention to lyrical content in particular...I think that as long as the singer seems to believe in what he's saying, its good enough for me. The vocals carry so much intensity that its quite clear that each word comes from the heart. Thursday incorporates the common emo-core garage band technique of mixing pretty melody with abrasive and chaotic agression. There is a reason that this has been a musical staple since Beethoven...It works. Thursday's musicians are capable and talented songwriters- each song avoids falling into a rut. At the end of the cd, the listener is not weary of angst but compelled to hit play again and get another fix from the album's numerous hooks.

Anger and Sadness,
By "stg6" (Montrose, CO USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Full Collapse (Audio CD)
I will admit that I am a new fan of Thursday. I only own their recent album, Full Collapse. However, I plan on buying their other music very soon. In Full Collapse, Thursday manages to touch your emotions in such a way that i have never heard before. I am an avid Get Up Kids fan, and I used to think that they were really emo. Well, that may be, but Thursday is the only band that has made me feel incredibly sad, angry, and happy all at the same time. That may sound bad to some of you, but anyone who is a true emo junkie will understand. Just picture beautiful singing to brilliant lyrics coupled with intense At the Drive-In like screaming in the background. The guy singing back up vocals on this cd probably has torn his vocal chords to shreds. This album is incredible, like an orgasm of sound. Before you waste your money on some girl, or on gas for your car, buy this album. It is definetly worth it.

My Favorite Album Ever,
By Infinity (NH) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Full Collapse (Audio CD)
Full Collapse is hands down my favorite album of all time. That is a big statement coming from me because I love music so much. I love every single note on this album, and know almost every word by heart. It would make no sense for me to try to list out my favorite songs on this album, because I would end up naming every one of them. Basically, this album got me into the whole emo/screamo/hardcore kind of music that now makes up most of what I listen to, and I still listen to it almost every day. I would recommend this album to anyone who is into this genre, or on the verge of getting into this genre.

Thursday is my favorite band. Full collapse is my favorite Thursday album. Therefore, Full Collapse is my favorite album. It's just so good. This album really got me into the whole emo, hardcore kind of music. And if you don't believe me about this album's mightiness, listen to it yourself. You'll be suprised.

The best cd of the year,

Finally... a band with so much emotion that it overwhelms you. It's emo for the hardcore kids and hardcore for the emo kids to put it in another form. Blending crunching melancholic guitars and a perfect rythm section, along with screamed and harmonized vocals, Thursday is one the best and original bands out there.

Thursday is a very interesting band. Not many could draw so many mixed reviews from so many listeners.
First off, I need to make it clear that this is *not* an emo band. They are definately heavily influenced by emo bands from the early 90s, but on terms of genre, Thursday is definately not what the real, vicious, angry emo was. For an example of what I mean, you should take a look at one of the earliest and most credited emo bands mentioned in the previous reviews, Guy Piccioto of Fugazi's RITES OF SPRING, who's 1980s release END ON END set a standard scenario for many emo bands to follow. Thursday is not a part of the first or second waves of emo, and that is something that needed to be addressed, because it seems like most of the people below get the wrong impression from the word "emo." Also, I am not an "emo" person. I actually try to detach myself from bands like Thursday as often as I can. Alright, to the review. Full Collapse was released a few years ago and I bought the silver sleeved, special edition CD with CD-ROM material for about 20 bucks at a Local Sam Goody. Am I ashamed? Well, I suppose I should be, but I'm not. I bought it on a whim based on advice from a friend who was very into the band at the time. The CD has two singles, "Understanding In a Car Crash" and "Cross Out the Eyes", neither of which have decent music videos and neither of which got decent airplay. I gave it a listen when I got home and I really would be lying if I said that I wasn't surprised. Thursday tore it up. It would be hard for me not to appreciate a band like Thursday. Good songwriting, unique vocal styles, interesting instrumental parts. Overall, it's a pretty good CD. The highlight tracks (to me) are the singles, "Standing On the Edge of Summer," "Concealer," "How Long Is the Night," and "Autobiography of a Nation." Thursday's lyrics are paranoid, anti-governmental, and everything you would expect from a teenage angst band. I don't think Thursday ever had the intention of being an anthem band or "Your Favorite Band." I don't think they every had the intention of being a girl-pants, black dye, scenester clip band, either. I'm pretty sure they just wanted to make music they thought some people would dig. They succeeded. ON "WAR ALL THE TIME": Really, it was too rushed. "Full Collapse" is better because it seems fuller and more complete. I never really listen to either CD much anymore.

My view... and my review,
By Mandy "ki11ingaristotle" (TN/IN) - See all my reviews

First I have to let this out so that anyone thinking of purchasing this CD can understand why they shouldn't listen to certain some body's below.
Opinions are worth reading if they make sense, and are educated. "ok. I used to like punk and screamo. Now I just like the lower screaming emo. Yea I have this album and the War All The Time. I never listen to these guys anymore. I used to like all the screaming and deathy lyrics, but as I got older I kind of appreciated other bands a lot more. Don't buy this cd unless you like At The Drive In. That's just who they sound like, only more screaming. Tight drums. Solid, but scratchy at times lyrics and a whole lotta good music. But they need a guy who can sing with out feeling as though he has to scream every 3 seconds. Thursday is ok, but I'm kinda dissapointed. There's better screamo out there. If you like Punk Check out Emery. Only I think They are Christian." There are many things wrong with this. First off, I am not a fan of hip-hop so I am not going to make an opinion to someone about buying the new Kayne West CD. Second, At The Drive In sounds nothing at all like Thursday. No other band in the world sounds like ATDI, and no other band in the world could possibly sound like Thursday. Third, Emery is not punk. The way you compare things make me wonder if you ever really listened to any of these bands at all. And last, Emery is Christain but do not like to label themselves as that, and their music isn't all about praising the lord, "The Weaks' End" features two sentences that just has the word God in it, and what does them being Christian have to do with anything? On to my opinion of this cd... This CD is wonderful. Its full of emotion, has occasional screaming, great guitars and great lyrics. This is the best Thursday CD. I agree with a review below that yes, the newest one is a tad bit more mainstream. My favorite songs are "Paris In Flames" and "Understanding In A Car Crash". Thursday started doing all of this "screamo/emo" stuff before it became such a great trend like it is today in 2005. This CD is very worth buying. Infact, many of the bands coming out today trying to do this stuff probably list Thursday as an influence. Thursday are the pioneers. They started out this way and aren't changing themselves for the world. Many of the new sreamo/emo bands sound the same, but Thursday does and will always have their own unique sound.

Let's hope this is the future of music,
This review is from: Full Collapse (Audio CD)
The first song I heard by this band was Standing on the Edge of Summer. I was amazed. It was the most incredible thing I had ever heard before. For a moment I had an urge to go download the CD. Then I came to my senses. A band this good is worth the money spent to buy the CD. I took a huge chance ny nuying a CD I had only heard one song to. I usually download everything. I'm glad I spent the money. It was the best 15 dollars I've spent in a long time. First of all, there's the music.Every song is musically beautiful, full of texture and with many layers. With 2 guitars, an emo-core band can do so much. One is melodic, soothing, and beautifully crafted, while the other pounds out heavy hard rock riffs. Thursday combines the two masterully to create a sound that's both original and beautiful. Combine this with amazing bass lines that flow perfectly with the music and talented percussion, and what you have is a musical experience. Any band that is able to portray emotion and feelings by their music alone has achieved something all musicians strive for, but few achieve. Thursday does just that. Listening to "Standing on the Edge of Summer" and ignoring the words, I can totally feel the warm summer breeze and smell freshly cut grass. It's amazing. Then, as if this all weren't enough, they combine insightful, emotional lyrics and a singer with a great voice and another with ear shattering screams to their music to create one of the best CD's I've ever heard. Geoff's soothing and relaxing voice will lull you, just to be ripped out of the trance by a scream that rips out your heart. The lyrics are more than just telling a story. They put images in your head to go along with the images the music is giving. It's truly an experience. If you can't appreciate this band's sound, I really pity you. You can go back to listening to crap like Nickleback that doesn't challenge the listener. This is a CD that everyone should own. It's one of the best that you can buy, and I promise you won't be dissapointed. |
