Book Description

October 1994
As a nationally recognized speaker, trainer, and consultant on the topics of creativity, self-esteem, and the power of laughter and play, Diane Loomans was determined to raise her daughter Julia with a high level of self-esteem. She realized that she needed to consciously choose to do things differently and to treat herself and her daughter with consistent respect and kindness. Diane found that when she was able to act in alignment with her values, her personal self-esteem was enhanced and she was able to model creative methods of conflict resolution and playful interaction for Julia. She began to write down her most successful methods.

For decades, parenting experts have written about the importance of providing children with a nurturing environment to grow up in. Few, however, have provided concrete, specific suggestions to create such an environment. Written by a mother and daughter team, Full Esteem Ahead: 100 Ways to Teach Values and Build Self-Esteem for All Ages is a breakthrough parenting guide that is fun and enriching for both adults and children. Through practical exercises, first person creative narratives, and quotes from great thinkers, Diane Loomans and Julia Loomans (Diane's teenage daughter) teach readers how to infuse life, play, love, school and family with the positive power of self-esteem.

Over sixteen years, Diane and Julia have originated hundreds of fun-filled techniques and have collected others from their friends. They have assembled one hundred of their favorites in Full Esteem Ahead. These techniques are designed to make day-to-day interactions in the family easier and more joyful and to help families take the much needed step from parenting with control to parenting with respect. In Full Esteem Ahead, these simple, easy-to-learn techniques are presented in a bite-sized format so that a busy parent can quickly find some inspiration.

This is the second book co-authored by the mother and daughter team of Diane and Julia Loomans. (Their first was the award-winning Positively Mother Goose.) Continuing their theme of celebrating self-esteem, the Loomans have written a groundbreaking guide to creative parenting for mothers and fathers who juggle the demands of work and home, but are passionate about giving their children huge doses of self-respect and self-esteem.

Using the techniques of Creative Conflict Resolution and Playful Interaction as a base, the Loomans offer parents and children hundreds of practical and fun exercises that promote a healthier, more joyful, and more loving family life. Amply annotated with uplifting quotes, inspiring poetry, and personal reflections from both mother and daughter, Full Esteem Ahead may simply be browsed through or consulted for specific nurturing issues. Each of its ten sections explores self-esteem together with one major aspect of family life or child development. Included are chapters on Esteem and Bedtime, Esteem and Learning, Esteem and the Holidays, and Esteem and Spirituality, among others. For parents who want to nurture their children with more joy and less anguish, more respect and less control, Full Esteem Ahead is an invaluable tool. -- Body Mind Spirit magazine, April/May 1995

5.0 out of 5 stars Inspiration for Teachers and Parents, September 12, 2009

This review is from: Full Esteem Ahead: 100 Ways to Build Self-Esteem in Children and Adults (Paperback)
I use this book to open my school year at the Day Care Center. I bless the teachers with reading "To The Caretakers of Children" and at Back to School night to the parents I read, "What all Children Want Their Parents to Know". In this day and age where children are so lacking in self esteem and social skills, this book although written some 15 years ago, sparks teachers and parents to give themselves to the children to encourage growth and belief of self. The ideas from a celebration of life book to the chapter "Letting Off Esteem" Creative Conflict Resolution speaks to the children of today.

1.0 out of 5 stars no help for adults, April 16, 2008
This review is from: Full Esteem Ahead: 100 Ways to Build Self-Esteem in Children and Adults (Paperback)
I ordered this book for an adult self esteem therapy group. I found maybe 10 exercises that were for adults. The majority of the material is activities that a parent does with child to boost self esteem and growth.
