This book is aptly named because not only has his heart been filled but hearing his story has filled my heart also. I first heard of him on DWTS and became interested in his story because he comes across as such a nice, likeable person. What I learned in the book is how he transformed into this warm, mature person from the brash young man he was. He was no different from any immature young male in his attitudes but what was heartwarming was to see how he matured despite injuries so horrific that no one could blame him from retreating into his own world. He's inspired me and gained my respect. He was open about how much he loves him mother and that's so nice to see when kids can be so cruelly indifferent as they try to gain their independence. His story is that of an average young soldier, not some dewy-eyed martyr. He struggled and despaired but he triumphed and that's the story worth reading. Plus it's a very captivating because it's so well written. The author easily engages the reader and moves the story right along. This is a book definitely worth reading!

J.R. Martinez is an amazing person. Very inspirational. At a time when I needed some words of encouragement, this book has helped me put some things into perscpetive. Makes you really look at your own life and see if there is something that you can do to help others in the face of your own tragedy! Please read it!

J.R. Martinez's book is an inspiration to us all. I am a disabled Vietnam Veteran and he inspires me. My own disability is from Agent Orange. The cancers, migraines, diabetes, ED, tinnitus, muscular issues I have, do not hold a candle to what he has overcome. I have seen how other veterans have let their service connected afflictions rule and diminish their quality of lives. I only wish they would read his story; it certainly will change their lives as well. J.R.; you are a Champion of your Spirit! I am so glad you are sharing it with the rest of us.

On a footnote.... I am so relieved that he was/is not further burdened with the necessity of dealing with Veterans Affairs or Congress. His book has re-ignited my goal of forcing change in the Veterans Affairs and in Congress so our veterans can get prompt and adequate care from those we must rely on by uniting all our veterans to speak as one at the polls. Unified Veterans of America

READ THIS BOOK!! Thank you J.R.

I have loved J.R. since he first appeared on All My Children. I confess I had not heard of him before that, however, my brother who lives in Houston, and rides motorcycles, had heard of him because my brother rides in the Wounded Warrior Project for bike riders in San Antonio. We all pulled for him to win DWTS! I confess also, I find J.R. very sexy. He is so full of heart (sic!) that you hardly notice his scars which is strange because they are so out there you can't miss him, but I was thrilled to read the rest of the story up to today. I hope his life continues to transform others. Read the book and support Wounded Warriors, they so deserve it. J.R. is just one example of how many lives are forever changed by war and the courage they display is amazing.

This is the story of soldier J. R.Martinez before and after being horrible burned by the explsion o a roadside bomb in Iraq. This young man has such a great attitude about his injury and the many operation to correct his disfigured face. His courage is phenomenal. Within the book is the story about a mother's love for her son and how important she was in his life. The respect and caring that they had for each other was quite touching.

However, I felt that the book lacked emotion and was mainly a narrative that was just reporting the facts. I never felt that I was "there" with J.R. The words, descriptions and syntax never drew me in to where I felt emotionally connected to the characters in the story. However, the acccount of how J.R triumphed after his accident is heartwarming.

JR, to most of us became a "name" from "Dancing with the Stars" writes a story here of a young, handsome man who had just started out, enters the military and after one month has his entire life and future turned inside out by a bomb that turns his vehicle into an inferno. JR writes with detail, and humor (yes, humor) as he faces each step on the road to physical, emotional recovery. He is a remarkable person, that is obvious from this book. I especially enjoyed the attention and love he portrays for his mom, who as an immigrant to this country works so hard to ensure JR's survival and that of siblings in her home country. His mom is paramount to his survival and recovery from his injuries. This is a must read.

This book was so inspiring and well written. JR's spirit shines through the narrative and shows how confidence and personality can triumph over injury and loss. I enjoyed getting to know JR through this book, and I admire the straightforward, smooth style Alexandra Fleming employed to weave events together and present us with this picture of a very unique young man. Kudos to both of you!
