Full House Season 1

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com

Set in San Francisco, family-friendly sitcom Full House centers around the adventures of a widowed father, his three children, and his two best friends. Danny (Bob Saget of America's Funniest Home Videos) is a straight-laced sportscaster, Joey (David Coulier) is a fun-loving stand-up comedian, and brother-in-law Jesse (John Stamos) is an Elvis-obsessed rocker. Danny's children include 11-year-old D.J. (Candace Cameron), five-year-old Stephanie (Jodie Sweetin), and baby Michelle (big-eyed future superstars Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen). Created by Jeff Franklin (Laverne and Shirley), the show ran on ABC for eight seasons.

In the pilot, "Our Very First Show," Joey and Jesse, who are both looking for a place to live, move into Danny's townhouse after the death of his wife (who was killed by a drunk driver). The deal is that they'll have to help look after the kids. It's a task for which both men are ill equipped. The fun comes from the trouble the girls get into each week and the many messes Joey and Jesse create in their attempts to set things right--particularly when it comes to cooking, cleaning, and diaper-changing--but also from the cheesy 1980s styles on display, like Jesse's big hair, spandex pants, and string ties.

The Complete First Season includes all 22 episodes plus the original un-aired pilot with John Posey as Danny. (In Franklin's commentary on "Our Very First Show," he notes that Paul Reiser was also considered for the role.) Noteworthy guest stars include Phyllis Diller ("But Seriously Folks"), Stacy Q ("D.J. Tanner's Day Off'), and Candace's brother Kirk "Growing Pains" Cameron ("Just One of the Guys"). While Full House was never a magnet for major awards, the program developed a large following during its long run (while the house got fuller yet), followed by an even longer after-life in syndication. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

5.0 out of 5 stars Thanks for a calm and enjoyable FAMILY show. February 13, 2005
Format:DVD
Our whole family enjoys this show. We have family members that pretty well cover all age groups and we all enjoy it. But then, we aren't the kind of people who find happiness and enjoyment in watching people create conflict, call names, find ways to cause pain and behave in other unhealthy and unproductive behaviors. This show is about ordinary people living normal lives in an unusual circumstance. There is something for the adults, the teen, the elementary aged child. There isn't great literature involved, there's nothing extraordinarily ground breaking, it's just nice, safe entertainment that can, at times, be used to help a family member deal with something that is going on in our nice, boring, normal lives.

If you don't enjoy Full House, don't buy it. Simple as that. But if you do like it, it's a fun dvd set. Can't wait for the 2nd season and the end of Jesse's mullet!

Enjoy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Three Men, Two Little Ladies, and a Baby August 30, 2006
Format:DVD|Amazon Verified Purchase
Life has dealt Danny Tanner (Bob Saget) a hard blow. A drunk driver has killed his wife and he's left to raise his three daughters on his own. Knowing he needs help, he asks his best friend Joey (Dave Coulier) and brother-in-law Jesse (John Stamos) to move into his house and help him raise his three daughters, 10 year old DJ (Candace Cameron), 5 year old Stephanie (Jodie Sweetin) and nine month old Michelle (Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen in their first role). Of course, they know nothing about raising kids, but they agree.

The result is this crazy mix of fun. While all three of the guys try to figure out what they are doing, the girls deal with the changes in their lives. DJ and Stephanie have to share a room. Joey is living in an alcove in the living room. And no one knows how to cook or clean, much less change Michelle's diaper. Combine that with chicken pox, school, and some different personalities, and you have the first season of this fun sit-com.

I've just recently started watching the show via reruns, and I've gotten so addicted I had to get this set. Even being relatively new, I recognized some things that were different this first season. Ok, yes, besides the 80's hair on Joey and Jesse. Compulsive cleaner Danny doesn't know how to clean here. Jesse's last name is Cochran. Joey is sleeping in the living room (something that changes in the wonderful "Joey's Place.") The only catch phrase we really hear is "Have mercy!" DJ's best friend Kimmy (Andrea Barber) is around, but only in a hand full of episodes.

However, the heart of the show is still there. Not only does every problem get solved in 23 minutes, but usually with a heart to heart talk. And let me tell you, this show can tug at your heartstrings while making you laugh. Not to say the show isn't cheesy and corny at times. It's still highly entertaining.

Of course, all the actors help the show. The adults do great in their roles. But it's the kids that blow me away. Both Candace Cameron and Jodie Sweetin really nail the parts. They are born actresses. Mary-Kate and Ashley are adorable as Michelle, thanks in part to the editing of the scenes and the patience of the rest of the cast.

Not only does this set contain the 22 episodes from season one, but we also get some cool extras. The original unaired pilot is included. The difference is John Posey is playing the role of Danny. That's pretty much it. Even the guest stars are the same. While it feels funny watching someone else in the role, it's nice to have. There are also two interesting commentary tracks from series creator Jeff Franklin. While he spends minimal time talking about those specific episodes, he shares lots of memories of creating, casting, and filming the first season. Finally, there's a marginally interesting pop-up trivia track on "The Miracle of Thanksgiving."

Like so much else that I recommend, this show was never going to be an award winner. But it is fun and entertaining, and that's all it takes to please me. If you are as easy to please as I am, you'll love this show.

10- absolutely wonderful
5- good
1- awful

This season didn't have one episode below a 5/10!!

Good news:
The people making this changed 2 doubled sided discs to four single side discs!

More about this dvd set:
The theme song is a longer version, with more images during the them. Personally, I would have preferred the song sung the same way as the re-runs, however it is nice to see more images of the characters than usual.

There are extras- commentary, and trivia. And these episodes are uncut, there are some scenes I don't think I 've ever seen before (and I've seen every episode many times)

My set came with a bonus disc with an episode of Growing Pains and of Step by Step. Some used sets will come with it, but I don't think new ones will.
