5.0 out of 5 stars The best book and anime ever !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!, February 12, 2006
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Full Moon: O Sagashite, Vol. 1 (Paperback)
I bought this book from Borders(I get everthing from borders in the graphic novels section)and I read part of the first chapter and loved it. When I finally got a chance to read the whole book I was so entertained by the characters I couldn't put it down. It is pretty sad that the main character in the story has a sarcoma in her throat and she might die if she doesn't go through with the operation. The only reason she doesn't want to have the operation is becuase she will have to get her vocal cords removed and won't be able to sing. Singing is Mitsuki's dream becuase she had a friend that left for the United States two years ago and since she lived in Japan they are very far apart. Eichi her friend who is now 16 and Mitsuki being 12 wishes to become 16 . Her wish comes true by these two harbingers that grant her wish and now she has to find a way to become a singer even without her crude grandmothers disaprovele. Even though this book is rated 13 and up I think it can be read by children between the ages of 11 and 13. Either way the art is quite buetiful and I don't think Mitsuki's eyes are to big.

5.0 out of 5 stars The most amazing thing ever!!, May 19, 2006
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Full Moon: O Sagashite, Vol. 1 (Paperback)
When I saw a little picture of one of the main characters(Takuto), I was like "Hey! Kitty ears and wings!!" I asked my friend about it and she said she had the manga! Not only will you be hooked on the characters designs(which are awesome!!), you will also have a great time learning more about each character!

At first you may think that it's a cheesy story-line. A girl meets shinigami, she has sarcoma and cant sing so they turn her into a pop super star and she gets tons and tons of fans. NO. NONONO. Do NOT think like that. The depth of the story line and the connections between the characters are great.

This is the BEST manga and the BEST anime I have ever seen/ read. A must get for any shojo lover!!!!

A Kid's Review
This review is from: Full Moon: O Sagashite, Vol. 1 (Paperback)
I first picked up this book while browsing in a bookstore. Not knowing what to expect, I thought that the summary on the back of the book sounded cute, so I bought it. I read the whole thing in one day, I just couldn't put it down! So the very next day I bought the next two volumes! [hah] I highly recommend this manga! Especially if you love shojo!

4.0 out of 5 stars Auditioning for a Singing Company -- a review by Abby, age 11, December 9, 2005
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Full Moon: O Sagashite, Vol. 1 (Paperback)
Mitsuki Koyama has a cancer growing in her throat, but she makes a promise to her love, Eichi, that the next time they meet, they will be closer to their dreams, Mitsuki's being a singer, and Eichi's being an astronomer. She wants to audition for a singing company, but she can't because her grandmother won't let her leave the house. Suddenly, when she is still feeling sad, two shinigami (death gods) named Takuto and Meroko, show up. Takuto uses some of his magic powers to make Mitsuki sixteen and healthy, so she can audition for the singing company. With Mitsuki's new body, does she have what it takes to be a great singer?

This book is wonderful because, even though it seems like a mushy love story at moments, the story is very realistic, and has a lot of humor in it. Also, since I love music, it's fun to read the lyrics Tanemura writes for Mitsuki to sing. The art is really lovely, but Mitsuki's eyes are a little bit too large for her face. I am a big-time manga reader, and read many different genres of manga, and I know the eyes are sometimes large, but Mitsuki's eyes were out of proportion. I think this series is mainly for ages eleven and up because there are some jokes and scenes that won't really make any sense to younger readers, and there is some use of bad language in the book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Anges..., July 14, 2005
This review is from: Full Moon: O Sagashite, Vol. 1 (Paperback)
I like this story because it doesn't try and be too sappy love story, and while it does harbor themes of death, it's not all about blood, violence, etc. I have to admit I almost overlooked this manga, but you shouldn't make the same mistake. Full Moon is usually silly and humorous, but then it can turn very sweet and loving.

If you want a shoujo manga that's pretty much safe to read in front of the parents, get this manga. It's a great story that'll leave you completely satisfied, and happy that you read it ^_^

It deals with death and has a bit of blood near the end of the series [when ya get there, its worth getting to!].. i loved this series.. i was a bit skeptical about singing stuff .. but its just a part of the book ^_^ it added it too the story nicely ^_^ it makes mitsuki looks soo much more pretty! well.. i just loveeeee arina tanemura's writings ^_^ her artwork is absolutely beautiful, and i cant wait to see the anime, which is probably released but i havent got the time yettt.. other great arina tanemura titles would include kamikaze kaitou jeanne (phantom thief jeanne [i believe]) and shinshin doumei cross [my spelling is a bit off], those are the ones ive read and i cant wait for more to come out!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fly me to the Moon Part 1, March 18, 2008
This review is from: Full Moon: O Sagashite, Vol. 1 (Paperback)

Mitsuki Koyama is a young girl (12) with a serious problem. She has a malignant growth called a sarcoma in her throat and her doctor wants to operate. He would have to remove her vocal chords in order to save her life. The trouble is this, her greatest dream is to become a singer so that her childhood love, a young man named Eichi who now lives in America, will be able to see her again. Besides the fact that her voice is in trouble owing to the cancer her grandmother is severely opposed to the idea that Mitsuki sings onstage and would consider her a disgrace. Both her and Dr. Wakaoji (her personal physician) think it's ridiculous that she refuse the surgery.

Mitsuki desperately wants to go to an audition to prove her grandmother and the doctor wrong. the day of the try outs two magical beings stumble (literally) into Mitsuki's life. They are the shinigami, or harbingers of death, assigned to children and tell Mistuki that she only has a year left to live. This spurns Mitsuki into action and she flees to the audition. Takuto, the male cat shinigami, takes pity on her and increases her age so that she can fairly compete, much to the dismay of his female counterpart, Meroko, a rabbit shinigami. Is Mitsuki's talent enough to find her true love again?

I'm a little leery of this series because, in design at least, it has elements of a magical girl series... and frankly because of the shinigami characters it feels a little like a magical girl series in disguise. My enthusiasm for Tanemura's work make me progress with reading this though, as her style of art and storytelling really compel me. I think the moral of the story is that I will read and adore anything by Tanemura (who won me over with Gentlemen's Alliance +). Her work is too good even if the genre of the story is usually not to my taste.

5.0 out of 5 stars Full Moon wo Sagashite, May 22, 2007
This review is from: Full Moon: O Sagashite, Vol. 1 (Paperback)
This is one pf the greatest mangas I've ever read! There are other reviews that give you the whole story line so I'll just say the minimun. This story features 12-year-old Mitsuki Kouyama. Mitsuki has a tumor in her throat, there is an operation that could save her life, but she refuses to go through with it because if she did she would lose her voice and that wouldn't do because it is her dream to become a singer. One day, two shinigami, Takuto and Meroko, show up at her house. All three of them being shocked because Mitsuki can see them, for some strange reason, and they tell her that she will only live for one more year. The shinigami Takuto, promises that he will help her with her dream and turns her into a healthy 16-year-old. And so, Mitsuki is thrown into the chaotic world of stardom. As I said before, this is a truly wonderful manga with 7 volumes total. You will not be disappointed with this series! The rest of the books are just as good, in some cases better, than the first. They go into detail about Eichi, Meroko's past, Izumi (a shinigami who is introduced later), and Takuto's feelings for Mitsuki. You would be completely satisfied if you purchased this series.

4.0 out of 5 stars Shoujo to the extreme..., July 17, 2005
By
tami "pinkboxcutter" (chicago, IL United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Full Moon: O Sagashite, Vol. 1 (Paperback)
I'm trying to review this manga subjectively... specifically, as a shoujo reader. Which I am not. Which is why I was slightly perturbed by the runaway love confessions, pop stars, soap-opery drama of poor health, and ambitious divas sadistic to the point of evil. And the cute little avatars that float around the heroine as stuffed animals when not in thier fabulously fashionable human forms. But it is cute? Yes. Are the drawings large-eyed, ruffly, all around adorable, and well-done to boot? Yes. Are the characters lovable to the point of a queasy stomanch, with thier overblown dreams and betting lives on pretty words? And are the villains shockingly destestable to the point you feel that they have no potential for doing anything other than being a scapegoat for conflict? Yes...

So, why do I think this manga is good?

Well, simply because it works. It is excellent being what it set out to be, which is a shoujo manga shoujo readers will love. If you are not a shoujo fan, your mind will be buzzing with skepticism on just how entertaining sugar-coated angst is, but approach it with a big heart, and... you'll be floored by Mitsuki's gentle determination, Takuto's eclectic moods, definite devotion and emerging affection, and Madoka's ruthless drive to suceed. Full moon speeds along breezily, letting readers see what they want; things unfold rather quickly, which can be a little overwhelming. Consider another popular series about raising to stardom, Princess Ai-the career stages in the first 2 volumes of that series is quickly whipped through in first half of full moon. It's not bad, just...quick. A bit baffling.

The illustrations are beautiful. Of course, every shoujo book should have some gorgeous bishies and Full moon certainly does. The main, character,MIstuki, is breathtaking and usually in pretty, creatively designed clothes.

All in all... Full moon is firmly grounded in shoujo roots. It boggles my mind, being practically terrified of that genre. But it is very good shoujo, mind. However, it bridges no gaps between genres, and those tend to be the best of all series. If you want to go for the pure shoujo of love and sweetness and doggedly cute characterization, Full Moon is your thing. If, perhaps, you want something other than absorbing shoujo into your bloodstream, you can try some shoujo titles that I find that a variety of people enjoy because of thier elements of intrigue and depth, in addition to the usual romance and dreams. Those would be Ayashi No Ceres, Kare Kano, and definitely, definitely Fruits Basket.
