Keiko Matsui's "Full Moon and the Shrine",
A Kid's Review
This review is from: Full Moon & Shrine (Audio CD)
Around 6 months ago, my dad got me this CD. Since he knew that I like piano music, he got it, even though he had never heard of Keiko Matsui in his life. That was an incredibly lucky guess. I admit that I was surprised at how good this CD was. The music on it is a nice blend of easy listening with a pinch of jazz. It is the type of CD that, no matter how repetitive it gets, you really like anyway. In my opinion, the way that the songs are put together is very creative. In short, if you like easy listening and/or contemporary music, get this CD. If you like jazz, but don't like the other 2 genres, then don't even think about it.

Beauty and the Unknown,

I heard this CD by accident when someone worked on my PC and left it in the drive. Lucky me! This is one of the most beautiful music collections I have ever heard. I don't say this lightly. I'm a musician. I grew up listening to jazz and playing classical music in the school band. I've been playing since I was 8 and I am so happy to finally see such a perfect mix of jazz and classical music. Keiko has an astounding sense of placement and beauty. Her accents are without question in perfect placement for stunningly beautiful music experiences. Her style is so hauntingly beautiful that it draws you in and you must keep listening to her cuts over and over, just for the experience! Keiko's music draws me into ever-increasing emotional venues. It's like experiencing a multi-faceted play with characters that bring out many different feelings. Can't wait to hear more!

Beautiful Piano Music.,

This is the best CD in my collection. I just love the sound of the piano that Keiko Matsui plays on this album and it is the first time in my life that I listen to a CD from the begining to end with out skipping track. This CD is just amazingly beautiful, great music and technically well performed by Keiko Matsui. If you love the sound of the piano of both technical and emotional express, this CD is for you. By the way, the latest LIVE version was not recorded that great.

Perhaps the best album by Keiko,

This is perhaps the best album by Keiko Matsui. As soon as you start playing this CD, Keiko's piano fills your mind. Keiko's piano is sometimes passionate, sometimes romantic and her songs are beautiful. If you love piano music with light touch of jazz, classic and contemporary, this is the one you ought to listen.

Best so far,

I own all 12 CDs by Keiko and her video. Overall, this is the best CD in my opinion. Some of her best music is here. Importantly, there is not a single cut that disappoints. I suppose that if you bought only 1 CD by her, then get this one. However, I recommend buying at least 4 CDs. This one, Dream Walk, The Keiko Matsui Collection, and her Live album. This will give you a general sampling. Beware, if you like her music the way I do, you will want more.

Great Smooth Jazz,
By A Customer

I'm an on-again-off-again jazz fan. I actually bought this CD as inspiration for a Japanese Exchange Student who want to investigate jazz piano. Sorry, she can listen to it but I'm keeping this one. Matsui san has captured what I will call both the soul of Japan and Jazz in her music. It brings to mind small caberets in the out of the way sectors of Tokyo that I visited many years ago. Her use of phrasing makes unique use of what painters call "white space" she knows how to blend sound and its absence into a dynamic whole. The selections also call to mind shrines and sacred places in Japan where I've encountered the Japanese portion of my own occidental spirit. She's really good. I'm going to be starting a Matsui Keiko collection.

Full Moon and the Shrine is addicting.,

I always thought jazz was kind of boring, although I can see some redeeming qualities in it. But this CD combines jazz with new age and is just the opposite of boring. I found 5 songs which I play over and over again, my favorite is actually Steps in the Night. If you're a fan of music featuring the piano like me, you'll be sure to enjoy this CD.The CD includes a very interesting music video version of Full Moon and the Shrine. Beautiful, and kind of spooky if you ask me. I don't know what the HDCD is supposed to mean but if it means that a higher quality version of the audio is available, I'm unaware of it. Of course I don't have a HDCD player though. Even more addicting than this CD are some tracks on Dream Walk, but this CD has a larger quantity of slightly less addicting tracks.

I bought this on a strange whim, having no idea what it contained...it was fate !! I love it. I love it more with each hearing. This jazz/pop/new age blend is hard to classify. It's serene, it's lush, it's gorgeous and melodic...it lifts my spirit with its beauty. Keiko Matsui is an extraordinary musician, a brilliant pianist and composer. Now I'm hooked and will have to get all her other recordings. What a discovery ! And Keiko has yet another fan added to her list...listen to this and you may be one too.
