Brightly illustrated with full-color drawings on almost every page , this overview provides enough specific details on sharks to be a useful addition to any collection. Several interesting tidbits highlight some of the unique characteristics of sharks. Maestro also provides a brief but effective description of the range and power of the sharks' senses. In addition to drawings of over 20 kinds of sharks, Guilio Maestro has included an excellent double-page map of the world showing broad differences in water temperatures and the types of sharks that inhabit those specific areas. Drawings of sharks' teeth are done life size, including a fossilized shark tooth. Even without chapters, index, or glossary, this is a good browsing book that updates and expands such favorites as Carol Carrick's Sand Tiger Shark (Clarion, 1979) and John F. This was a nice introduction to sharks. It covers several different kinds of sharks. It has a nice illustration of the cartilage frame of a shark which really helped the kids understand it better. There is information on feeding, birth and swimming. While we've read a lot about sharks this book had new information and held their attention. The illustrations were well done, but actual pictures would be helpful as well.

There is a reference to "400 million years ago" which, depending on your world view, would need to be edited. This wasn't all "environmental wacky" either. It does say that humans kill sharks and use them for various things, and that sharks sometimes kill people, but both sides are presented fairly and without judgment.

One of the better basic shark books. If you want to go indepth, you'll need to find something else though. My 3rd graders and K kid loved it.
