4.0 out of 5 stars Nice format of pieced block designs
Buy this book if you enjoy collecting quilt block patterns, and would like to see some fresh updates on traditional ideas. There's also an interesting section on pieced border designs. If you're comfortable about calculating yardage, and cutting & piecing quilt blocks on your own, this book is fine. But if you're a beginner, or if you prefer to have more detailed...

I loved just flipping through the book but after reading about actually getting started and putting it together... too complicated for me! Like other reviewers, I found that the lack of rotary cutter directions, templates sans seam allowances, and less than clear directions for piecing to be insurmountable problems for any but experienced, confident quilters. It is a beautiful book and very inspiring, though, so my recommendation is this: don't pass up the opportunity to check this one out at the library. Then watch for it to go on clearance and get a copy for yourself!

3.0 out of 5 stars Very Good Ideas, June 17, 1999

This review is from: 101 Full-Size Quilt Blocks and Borders (Better Homes & Gardens) (Spiral-bound)
I am a beginning quilter. My husband got me this book for my birthday. I like the ideas that are in the book, but I think the directions are confusing. It is alot of fun to look at and my family enjoys picking out the quilts they want me to make. I would not recommend it to someone who wants to learn to piece. The patterns are just too confusing.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not really worth the space it takes., April 3, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: 101 Full-Size Quilt Blocks and Borders (Better Homes & Gardens) (Spiral-bound)
What a waste. This was one of the first quilt books I bought and I guess I was looking more for an encyclopedia or how-to for a number of basic blocks. This is NEITHER.

I also felt cheated about the number of blocks promised. They've thrown in a lot of very simple applique blocks to get to the 101.
I have since gotten Barbra Brackman's Block base program and that is a true encyclopedia. There are many rotary cutting or other technique books that would be so much better than this for actual block or quilt making. This has no cutting or assembly suggestions.

4.0 out of 5 stars Excellent source of info on basic and novelty quilt blocks!, September 4, 1998

This review is from: 101 Full-Size Quilt Blocks and Borders (Better Homes & Gardens) (Spiral-bound)
This book is an excellent source of information on basic quilt blocks and novelty blocks you may not have seen before. I like the borders shown and the different color options for each block. Information on making a bed-size quilt is given for each block. The book will lie flat since it has spiral binding. The only bad thing about the book is that you must trace the pattern pieces from a block picture and add seam allowances -- no actual pieces are charted. Overall, a good choice for any quilter's library.

4.0 out of 5 stars This was worth purchasing for new quilting ideas., September 30, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: 101 Full-Size Quilt Blocks and Borders (Better Homes & Gardens) (Spiral-bound)
The book has 2 different photo color photographs showing an example of the blocks with piecing instructions beneath it. On the next page is a full diagram of the block that can be traced. The book is worth getting because the pictures of the blocks are so pretty & it can give user's new ideas for quilting. This book has so many choices and different combinations that will be useful for putting together new projects. The only bad thing is adding in the 1/4 inch inseam allowance to each piece of the block. The book is for experienced quilters because some of the blocks are applique designs or would require previous experience for sewing them together.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great motivator., April 17, 2001

This book is a really great motivator. I am a novice at quilting : I am currently on my fifth one. Most of the quilts I have done were pretty simple designs and this book challenged me with more complex patterns. It has inspired me to create some interesting variations. I admit that the instructions are a bit confusing, but overall I think everyone can benefit from it. The blocks vary from very simple to complex. From beginners to experts, this one has something for us all......

2.0 out of 5 stars Not impressed, August 30, 2004
This review is from: 101 Full-Size Quilt Blocks and Borders (Better Homes & Gardens) (Spiral-bound)
Not as impressed as I thought. This has some very nice examples in it, but no way of knowing how much fabric, how to cut and piece together. Very self explanitory. I was looking for something a bit more definitive for putting the blocks together.
