Review of Full Spectrum,
By A Customer
This review is from: Full Spectrum: The Complete History of the Philadelphia Flyers (Special Feature: New Beginnings: The 1996-97 Season) (Hardcover)
I have read hundreds of hockey books in my life, and no book comes close to Full Spectrum. It is the ultimate book for any Philadelphia Flyers fan anywhere, at any time. Even if your not a Flyers fan or even a hockey fan, you will enjoy this book. From the beginning of the NHL's most succsful expansion team to the 2 Stanley Cups in the mid-70s to the 35 game unbeaten streak in 1980 to the sad death of star goalie Pelle Lindbergh to the firing of Bob Clarke in 1990 to the long story of the Eric Lindros trade to the trade for John LeClair and Eric Desjardins in 1995. The book also includes a brief story of the 1996-97 season, the first one at the Core States (now First Union)Center. This book is the best Flyers book around and is my favorite.

The only reason I say this was "surprisingly well written" is because I know the author from his Hockey News columns which tended to be exercises in Simon Nolet and Bart Crashley obscure hockey player name dropping. Greenberg proves here he is a first-rate journalist and hockey historian. The thing that blew me away was the injury details. This is the only hockey history book I've ever read that details injuries and their impact on the team. Gave me even greater appreciation for Mark Howe as he was one banged up hockey player at times. The other thing is the amount of eye injuries (Barry Ashbee's and Bernie Parent's aside) that occurred in the pre-visor, pre-helmet day gives pause for thought. I also dug the politics of getting the Flyers into the NHL, the arena problems (roof blew off in yr 1 in '67/68) and why they went down that goon hockey (blame Noel Picard and the St. Louis Blues) path. All in all, a great history of a "love 'em or hate 'em" team that has had more than its fair share of glory, failure and controversy. The length and detail alone make this a bargain at this price.

I totally enjoyed this book, it's ideal for a newbie Flyers Fan as well as a seasoned veteran who was with them through thick and thin; like the 1974 and 1975 Stanley Cup years, the six year playoff drought, the Pelle Lindberg accident, et al. I would recommend this book to anyone.
