William Engdahl's Full Spectrum Dominance exposes our military's relentless pursuit of total control of the world by any means possible, including a nuclear first-strike, for which purpose it is constantly upgrading our nuclear arsenal and delivery systems, resetting the Doomsday Clock perilously close to Midnight. This is an excellent book, that goes a lot to explaining US foreign policy decisions of the last thirty years. The author uses the position papers of high level Pentagon studies and released National Security Council memorandum to back it all up. Overall it is a fast though weighty read. Would recommend to anybody wanting the unvarnished truth.
