4.0 out of 5 stars It's been a long wait!, December 14, 2005

GoodFolk (Va Beach, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Full Tide (Audio CD)
First release of "new" material by Mary Black in over five years. Promising track list with covers of Noel Brazil, Sandy Denny, Dylan; even a few penned by MB and son. The album is fairly reminiscent of Black's more recent releases, a mix of "adult contemporary" cuts with some folk, some traditional, a little gaelic thrown in for good measure.

Like many (most? imho) of her albums, it is the quiet, imtimate cuts that shine brightest on Full Tide. Mary's vocals come through strong, her allure is the way she can sing so beautifully and passionately with seeming effortlessness. But the lineup is a bit disjointed; it takes a while for this album to hit its stride.

Mary Black fans will nonetheless want to add this new material to their collection. If you are new to Mary Black, however, I would look to earlier albums (try "Holy Ground" for a more traditional sound, "Speaking with the Angel" for a bit more contemporary sound) as an introduction to MB's beautiful vocals before trying Full Tide.

"Full Tide" has all different kinds of moods in it. Sentimental, upbeat & perky, hopeful & soulful. I love every Mary Black recording and this is certainly no exception.

5.0 out of 5 stars Mary goes full circle..., June 17, 2011

Full Tide is unlike other albums by Mary Black. This one is especially understated and contemporary. When listening to this CD, I'm content to sit down and go nowhere in my mind--to listen completely. And that is enough. That's the beauty of this music. It is a calming, peaceful set of songs. The musicians noticeably chose subdued acoustics and minimal production. Mary's voice is the only necessity, and they know that. Good album. If you are a lover of beautiful sounds, buy it.

I've been in love with this lady's voice and delivery since I first heard her version of "Who Knows Where The Time Goes" some years back. I'm currently on a kick of listening to only my Mary Black collection.
