5.0 out of 5 stars Brilliant songwriter and great singer
Victoria began her recording career with this 1995 album, on which she co-wrote every song. I hoped it would mark the start of a hugely successful career as a country singer, but it was not to be. Since then, Victoria had one more album for Warner brothers and another on her own label. However, she has been extremely successful as a songwriter, writing or co-writing songs...

3.0 out of 5 stars Victoria Shaw - In Full View (1995)
over-all 3 star... just good pop/country from the 90's
If you like Victoria you'll like Trisha Yearwood and vice versa...

Good as Gone -- a good 80s retro-pop-country

Victoria began her recording career with this 1995 album, on which she co-wrote every song. I hoped it would mark the start of a hugely successful career as a country singer, but it was not to be. Since then, Victoria had one more album for Warner brothers and another on her own label. However, she has been extremely successful as a songwriter, writing or co-writing songs that have been successful for several major stars. Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood eventually recorded one such song, Where your road leads, as a duet. Victoria's original can be found on this album.

Victoria's comparative failure as a singer is a mystery to me, because she has a lovely voice, well suited to the songs she sings. Apart from Where your road leads, there are several brilliant songs here, my favorite being A day in the life of a single mother, which takes the optimistic view of the subject. Indeed, the overall feel of the album is bright and cheery.

Jim Ed Norman produced the album, which was generally typical of mid nineties pop country. However, Victoria's great songs and lovely voice ensure that this is well above average quality.

I'm a great fan of Brent Mason and have been trying to get every album he has recorded on, as he usually makes a huge difference in the end product. I have to say that I was disappointed when I listened to this CD. I think the problem lies in the use of the tremendous talent i.e too many great players on the credits . Most albums nowadays are recorded with loads of top quality studio players, but you do find that a couple of them are present all the way through the tracks - not the case on this CD, and that alone is enough to lose a lot of 'feel' for the songs. One plus point is the truly excellent 'Cry Wolf', which has passion and feel in abundance, but the strange use of the tremendous musicians playing on this CD leaves you feeling a little cold. It's like there are 3 truly excellent bands backing Victoria, but each of them have been chosen to play on the wrong tracks, or worse, have only been used because of who they are (Brent Mason being the prime example). It's OK, but when you compare it to the efforts of Jann Browne, Lari White & many others in the similar styling, it falls way, way, way too short for my liking.
