Book Description

0444898336 978-0444898333 January 1993
Science and technology related to Fullerene C60 and related compounds have attracted the attention and research interest of many scientists and engineers in recent years. This attraction stems from the Fullerenes' symmetry, chemical and physical properties, and potential utilization in nanotechnology. Although Fuller, from whom Fullerenes get their name, lived in this century, the Fullerene story (with its ties to symmetry) predates modern science. The book opens with a review of his life. Modern history of fivefold symmetry and the icosahedron began between 1984 and 1985, when Shechtman and his research team opened a new branch in crystallography (fivefold symmetry) and when the Kroto/Smalley research team discovered the C60 molecule (truncated icosahedron). The production of solid C60, by the Huffman/Kraschmer research team in 1990 provided a new stimulus for research by producing C60 in macroscopic amounts for use by the scientific and technological community. This achievement led to developments such as Koruga's August 1992 creation of the dimer C116 using scanning tunnelling engineering and Loutfy's hydrogenation of C60 and construction of the first Ni/C60 rechargeable batteries in December, 1992. New inventions based on C60 will continue to be forthcoming, particularly in the areas of superconductivity, quantum devices, and molecular electronic devices. The discovery of the C60 molecule (Kroto/Smalley), production of solid C116 (Huffman/Kraeschmer) and technological inventions such as C116 (Koruga) have been chance discoveries. A short history of these discoveries is detailed in the book, along with the results of the authors' Fullerene research efforts, including atomic resolution images of Fullerene C60, production of nanotubes, hydrogenation of C60, Ni/C60, batteries, nanotechnology of C61, comparison of C60 with biological systems, and others. As Fullerene C60 will require control engineering, an overview of control systems - in particular, general and optimal control of the Schroedinger equation, is contained. In addition, some experimental and theoretical work of other researchers are also presented.

4.0 out of 5 stars outdated, but good summary in its time, July 4, 2006
This review is from: Fullerene C60 (Hardcover)
You should not get this book, as it is now heavily outdated. But in 1993, it gave a very good summary of what was known about C60 and its many variants. Already then, there was great recognition of its manifold promises for industrial uses. As the title suggests, the book explores these, under physics, microbiology and nanotech.

But the book also gives a retrospective. In the few short years to 93, a lot of research was conducted on C60, and Koruga strived to give proper accreditation to those who made the key advances.
