Absolute MUST HAVE,
By A Customer
This review is from: Full House Aces High (Audio CD)
Let me begin by saying that the Aces were one of the most extraordinarily talented bands ever to perform, anytime, anyplace. But if you're here, you probably already know that. This CD was, in fact, recorded from an LP, presumably because the original master tapes are either unavailable or not usable; decent copies of even the original LP is a rarity. However, the recording people have done an absolutely fantastic job of cleaning it up. In the quietest passages, you can hear some minor surface noise, but it is extremely minor and far from annoying. The sound quality is dynamic and warm, and would lead one to conclude the CD may have been made from a test pressing or other higher quality recording. DO NOT BE PUT OFF BY THIS FACT. Read on. I believe these performances represent the absolute best work the Aces' ever did. They are, simply put, fabulous. I found the music to be even more engaging than the studio originals. I seldom find a live recording that is tolerable (out of hundreds of live recordings I own, only a couple ever get listened to). This one is not only tolerable, I believe it is some of the Aces' finest work. If you are an Aces fan, this album is a must-have. You may well find that you prefer it over the studio albums just because of the musicianship in the recordings. The songs are all fairly true to their original forms, with a couple of deviations which are nice. Get it, today.

I didn't really "discover" the Aces until the early '80s after almost all of their albums were out of print. Thankfully I was able to find them all in cut-out bins and used stores. Believe me I wanted them ALL! I recommend every one. Shortly after I completed my collection of their '70s albums, they released "How the Hell Do You Spell Rythum", and WOW! as they say: "the hits just keep on comin'!" At about the same time I found an ad in the back of Rolling Stone for the double live album "Full House/Aces High", mail-order only. To make a long story short it is one of the best live albums I own. Weird thing though, the vinyl discs sound better than the CD and I have never said that about anything else I've ever heard. This is a real shame because the sound ranked right up there with the best live albums of that time period (Little Feat's "Waiting for Columbus" to name my favorite). It was MADE for compact disc. Through the head-phones it almost sounds like it was recorded off of the old vinyl album. I still give this 5 stars. It is absolutely a country, bluesy, funky, kick ass CD and you'll love it. I just hope they can remaster it someday.

One of the Aces' Highest,

I am always leery of live albums because hearing a crowd in the background usually distracts me. But this album came highly recommended by a trusted source, so I took a chance on it and discovered it is possible to make a live album that's really hot. The Aces are a totally unigue band with a sound all their own and these tracks are some of their best numbers. In my mind, there are many genres of music, country, blues, rock, etc. and then there is Aces' music; a superior genre all its own. Here they've recorded perfomances at several different concerts with other great musicians added to the mix, all attended by enthusiastic audiences. When you listen to the album, it's easy to picture the The Ace's soulful lead singer, Russell Smith, having a great time with his songs, his band and his fans. I promise you will never tire of listening to this album because these are great songs delivered by the most talented of musicians with genuine emotion and heartfelt energy.

My copy of this CD is a silver CD, not a CDR as stated by a previous reviewer. Perhaps he/she bought an illegal copy ?
Also, the sound quality is not bad at all on my copy. Much better than I expected. Certainly head and shoulders above the other "old" Aces live discs I have heard. A worthwhile purchase.

A ball of fun. Toe-tapping tunes from a very entertaining band. Worth the price of admission just for "Who Will The Next Fool Be?" and "King of The Cowboys". So grab a cold one, send the kids to the movies, call up your buddies and crank it up. This is an older recording, done live, so reach over and give the subwoofer a twist or two.

This album was my introduction to the Aces, back in the early 80's. I've listened to a lot of their stuff since, but none of it even comes close to this one. They were obviously enjoying making this music, the level of polish in the performance is incredible.
The CD is slightly disappointing, in that it is clearly recorded from an album, not the original tapes. Still, it is such a great album that it doesn't kill it. If you're an Aces fan, buy this one!

VINTAGE ACES.......POOR POST PRODUCTION,

I HAVE BEEN A FAN OF THE"ACES" FOR 25 YEARS. THEIR MUSIC IS ALWAYSGREAT. THERE POST PRODUCTION HAS BEEN SUMWHAT SUSPECT AS OF LATE.THE ONLY DOWN SIDE TO THIS RECORDING IS THAT IT SOUNDS LIKE IT WAS COPIED FROM A RECORD COMPLETE WITH ALOT OF BACKGROUND NOISE, CRACKS, AND POPS. WHAT WERE THEY THINKING. I ALWAYS LISTEN TO A CD THE FIRST TIME VIA HEADPHONES. BOY WAS I SURPRISED TO HEAR ALL THE EXCESS NOISE. THE MUSIC AND SINGING ARE JUST AS I REMEMBER THEM IN THE MIDDLE "80s". LIKE A FINE WINE. IT JUST GETS BETTER WITH AGE..........

I LOVE THIS GROUP, AND THIS IS A REALLY GOOD ALBUM, BUT THE GROUP SOLD OUT TO CHEAP CD-RS!!! THIS IS MADE ON CR-R!!..BE AWARE THAT THE ACES USED CD-R'S FOR THIS, NOT SILVER CDS FOR "AMAZING RHYTHM ACES - FULL HOUSE ACES HIGH CD"! THIS REALLY MATTERS TO ME BECAUSE IT IS STILL VERY EXPENSIVE, AND CD-RS DO NOT LAST LIKE PRESSED SILVER CDS, AND THEY SCRATH VERY EASILY! HOW MUCH DID YOU GUYS REALLY SAVE?
