Book Description

October 20, 1995 0415032806 978-0415032803 2
Fully Exposed is a pioneering cultural history of the photography of the male nude which sets the photographer and the model within our cultural and historical perceptions and prejudices. This second edition extends the book's coverage so that the story from the beginnings of the medium to the present day is complete.
Fully Exposed is lavishly illustrated with over two hundred and fifty photographs, many of them new to this edition. Different chapters discuss how the male nude has been used by artists, the way it has been treated in the popular press,in relation to British colonialism and scientific ideology. It also discusses `private pictures' taken at home or acquired as erotic material by the private collector. A final chapter brings the book up-to-date and discusses the male nude in the nineties.
The combination of art criticism and photographic essay make this an unusual and important book both for academics and the general reader.

Editorial Reviews

Review

'How interesting to see quite so many penises all at once. This well researched book goes from the 1960's to the present with over 250 photographs. The title says it all. I found it absorbing.' - - Passion Brigade Newsletter No. 12

5.0 out of 5 stars The Most Comprehensive Study of Male Nude Photography Ever, August 1, 2000
By
L. Huber (Charlotte, NC USA) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Fully Exposed: The Male Nude in Photography (Paperback)
For those of you who are true connoisseurs of male nude photography, this book is indispensible. I guarantee you will find pictures you have never seen before, as author Cooper had access to the Kinsey Vaults to prepare this book. The text is fascinating, but complex. The range of the sources of the photos (from medical files, to glossy beefcake, to news photos of streakers, to war photos, to personal photo collections, etc.) is staggering. You will be both aroused and appalled by the photos you see. All photos are in black & white. Frontal nudity, erections, and photos of sex action are shown. In spite of the titilation factor, this book is a serious treatise on the history and psychology of male nude photography and of society's reaction to it. This book is an incredible achievement.

4.0 out of 5 stars A solid overview, August 22, 2001
By
This review is from: Fully Exposed: The Male Nude in Photography (Paperback)
Emmanuel Cooper in FULLY EXPOSED succeeds in presenting a history, a fine argument for photography as a Fine Art form, and then proceeds to take us on a picaresque journey through the various aspects of photography of the male nude. There is much more here than meets the perusing eye. Cooper includes the anthropologic studies made by investigating photographers, takes the lid off the cauldron of the controversy of "documenting" maleness and of medical oddities (which in other hands could be voyeuristic), and then proceeds to fill his meaty document with generous illustrations. Cooper's writing style, while very informed, is casual and reader friendly. A good addition to the photography lovers' library.

2.0 out of 5 stars Interesting, but..., December 13, 2008
This review is from: Fully Exposed: The Male Nude in Photography (Paperback)
Cooper's test is fascinating and extensive. Unfortunately the reproduction of the photographs is TERRIBLE! At least this is true of the paperback edition and mine was sold as and seemed new. If you must have it, buy the cheapest used copy you can find. A big disappointment.
