Editorial Reviews

Remember The Beat Farmers? Happy Boy, Gun Sale At The Church, Baby's Liquor'd Up, Beat Generationit keeps going and so do the Farmers. The Farmers are back, with a PURE, HONEST, FULMINATING source of Rock and Roll Swashbuckle. Turn it up and shake a kidney stone loose! These guys have more lives than a cat. They sound like Bo Diddley, CCR, Joe South, and the Yardbirds shoved into a food processor, stuffed into a shotgun shell, and blasted into a beer keg at three in the morning in Faron Young's rumpus room. It all started with Jerry Raney's desperate youth as a hellion, blowin' 'round El Centro, California. Jerry started hanging out in various hobo camps, learning the guitar. He moved west in search of Rebels, Rogues, and Renegades. He found 'em. It was San Diego. and the Beat Farmers were born! The Beat Farmers turned into the Farmers, and lost a couple of fixtures along the way. Country Dick Montana in '95 and Buddy Blue in '06. With guitars in hand and ghosts ridin' with 'em, the Farmers ROCK ON and they are now allowed back in most states!

4.0 out of 5 stars The Farmers = The Beat Farmers - Beat (good tunes, though), September 8, 2009
By
K "Drew" (Back East, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fulmination (Audio CD)
I do not try to hide the fact that I am a huge Beat Farmer fan. In fact, I am proud of my affiliation with the band. Sadly, when we lost Country Dick, the Beat Farmers died with him. While the spawn of bands after the end of the Beat Farmers included some sort of combination of Jerry Raney, Joey Harris, Rollie Love, and/or Buddy Blue (Raney-Blue, Powerthud, The Flying Putos, Joey Harris and the Mentals, and The Farmers to name a few if not all), they could never match the joy that was the Beat Farmers.

That said, this new album from The Farmers is NOT a BEAT FARMER album. That said, it is pure Jerry Raney from vocals to guitar and shows the side of him that he brought to the Beat Farmer's musical mystery tour. The album is a nice collection of tunes. If you are a BFer fan, you should pick this up. In fact, the only thing missing here is the guitar sound from Joey Harris and his vocals. Then again, the same can be said about Joey's latest effort "Joey Harris And The Mentals" where Jerry's guitar and vocals are missed.

Put the two albums together, and it may have been a classic. As they stand alone, they are solid and very respectable albums. I guess I long for the time where times were a little less complex and the what mattered was the music. I am still bothered by what eventually happened after the end of the BFers but life has moved on, we all grow older, and cherish the great memories of what once was.

BOTTOM LINE: Jerry can still play that guitar and you should buy this album now!

4.0 out of 5 stars Farmers rock on, with just one flaw.., November 5, 2009

I actually PAID for this cd, Dan would be so proud of me( no matter what michelle thinks). It has some good songs, some funny-BF'er funny that is, lines too. The quality of the guys abilities shines through- this band has what is left of the elite from the early punk/new wave days in San Diego-and they play like it! My only complaint is that is is recorded TOO good, it sounds TOO slick, I need to hear the guitars more front and center. Jerry is too good not to take over on each song. Sully and Bongo are awesome as the backbeat of the band, Corbin's vocals fit in very nicely, and of course, Jerry Raney can play guitar with ANYONE! So go buy this one, grab a beer, swing your partner around, belch a few, and have a blast.

5.0 out of 5 stars Worthy Addition to Great Tradition, July 5, 2010
This review is from: Fulmination (Audio CD)
The Farmers are resilient, rock'n'roll survivors. Their pedigree (Penetrators, Beat Farmers, Powerthud, you name it) speaks for itself. The music on this disc is rocks harder than most of the earlier Farmer/Beat Farmer discs, a sign of Jerry Raney's writing taking the forefront. "Come Over Here" has an unusual beat and structure, but packs power unheard on 2005's superb disc "Loaded". "Your Own Way" is a favorite from the band's live show, a chugging rocker that shows Jerry's dedication to Chuck Berry. The band's local fan base is paid its due on "East County Woman" and Bongo's Kmak's "Walking Into Lakeside", both showing the wacky humor that is a tradition in Farmer/Beat Farmer music.
"Mr Dynamite" features both vocalists, with Corbin Turner joining in as Jerry does some serious shredding on guitar, on what might be the sleeper on this disc. Corbin does a bit of Country Dick channeling on "Mexicali Nights", a crowd-pleaser that sings the simple pleasures of cool cerveza in the summertime, while weaving a tale of colorful characters in a border town. The instrumental "Cantaloupe Moon" dates back to Jerry's days with the seminal San Diego blues-rock band Glory, in the late sixties.
'Fulmination' is a statement from a band that has weathered the storms and lost none of its swagger. Chis (Sully) Sullivan shines on bass, Bongo is in top form, and the band seems ready to lay groundwork for more adventures.
