4.0 out of 5 stars TS-501
After using the original TS-101 folding horses for a few years and always feeling they were just a little bit to low for my back, I recently decided to purchase a set of the TS-501 folding horses. The extra height the extendable legs provide definitely make it easier on my lower back, especially when working with a sheet of ¾" plywood or something similar by myself...

There are some definite postitive features about these particular sawhorses, but as a contractor often on the move some drawbacks. The amount of weight the TS-501 sawhorses can handle is surely impressive, but the folding style legs leave an uneasy feeling with any substantial weight load. The legs never seem to open well all the way. The legs have a potential to fold with any shift of the weight. An accident like this occurred with me. I had set a significant amount of deck boards on the saw horses for the weekend and when I had returned the legs had buckled to the side, the boards were scattered and the opposite legs had broken through the manufactures stop. Fortunately nothing below was damamged and the boards remained in tact, but my saw horses are useless now.

4.0 out of 5 stars TS-501, December 13, 2001

After using the original TS-101 folding horses for a few years and always feeling they were just a little bit to low for my back, I recently decided to purchase a set of the TS-501 folding horses. The extra height the extendable legs provide definitely make it easier on my lower back, especially when working with a sheet of ¾" plywood or something similar by myself. Portability is always a big factor for me with any tool or piece of equipment due to the fact that my truck is already well beyond being full with other necessary tools and job materials. Traditional fixed saw horses are out of the question. These horses are quite rugged and take up very little room when folded.
As with other folding horses I have used, you have to be sure and preset the legs squarely on the surface below before use or they may have a tendency to spread unevenly and become unstable when you place a heavy object on them. I personally feel that an additional locking pin for the legs would be an excellent safety improvement. For some reason there doesn't seem to be much documentation or user instruction included with the horses and not much more available on Fulton's website.
I have found that mounting a 2 X 4 on the top of the horses stiffens and adds a good deal of stability as well as helping to preventing accidental contact of a saw blade with the metal top. The 2 X 4 also helps prevent slippage and scratches the surface of the material being worked with. The legs can only be folded back in for storage when set in the lowest position, which requires removing and reinstalling the four wing nuts and bolts used to secure the leg extensions. I also believe it is intended, from a safety standpoint, that the maximum load only be applied with the legs set in the lowest retracted position, but without any documentation from the manufacture, I can't confirm this.
I don't think I would feel comfortable using these horses as a work platform to stand on, but with an eight foot 2 X 12 plank placed across them and secured in place with a couple of "Quick Clamp" bar clamps, the horses do make a good, stable base to mount a miter saw to or for use as a temporary work bench. If you need job site portability and want to make things a little easier on your lower back when working, then within the limits of the design, the TS-501 should be a good choice.

4.0 out of 5 stars Tote-A-Horse Portable Adjustable Sawhorses, September 17, 2000

Good heavy duty sawhorses, I have 4, and they are easy to fold up and store. Fairly quick and easy to adjust the height. The only negative thing is they will sink in to the ground if used outside and a lot of weight is put on them, need to support them with 1X material.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good, but needs improvement., June 5, 2001
This review is from: Fulton TS-501Tote-A-Horse Adjustable 25-Inch to 42-Inch Tall Sawhorse, Pair (Tools & Home Improvement)
The main reason I purchased the Tote-a-Horse TS-501 was that the legs folded down inside the body of the unit - making a very small package for storage - important to a weekend warrior like myself. Each of the four legs is made up of two heavy gage stamped metal pieces. One leg segment is bolted to the TS-501 body and attaches to the second 'adjustable' segment via stamped holes and tabs, and secures with a carriage bolt and wing nut. The grist is: the legs wont fold into the body for storage unless you completely remove and re-attatch all 4 of the leg segments at the at the lowest (unusable) level. At that level there is no hole for the carriage bolt through both leg segments. So, you have to store the nuts and bolts (easy to loose) somewhere. I returned my TS-501s and got the Tote-a-Horse TS-101. Same as the TS-501 but the non-adjustable legs fold into the body of the unit - no fuss, no muss - and they're less expensive.

1.0 out of 5 stars widow makers, November 5, 2004
This review is from: Fulton TS-501Tote-A-Horse Adjustable 25-Inch to 42-Inch Tall Sawhorse, Pair (Tools & Home Improvement)
The idea for the product seemed good. They are the only tool in my truck that I hate to use. The legs do not stay folded up unless you use two hands( one for carrying, the other for holding the legs in). I have used mine for over one year and the main bolts need to be tightened almost every time. The amount that I have used them on the stairs, like the photo shows, is never. The feet are to small and they sink in any kind of ground other than asphalt or concrete. The small metal angle that holds the legs perpendicular to the top, allows the legs to wabble, they are not sturdy at all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best sawhorses I've owned, January 28, 2003

Completely made of metal, these saw horses are solid and stable. Legs fold when the extensions are fully retracted and there is a hole for the wing nut and bolt to hold the extensions in place. Not a problem for me. Four nuts and bolts, big deal! Eight for the pair. Each sawhorse weighs about 20 lbs. There are metal stops to prevent the legs from folding back in when they are in position for use. So, no chance for the sawhorse to collapse while holding up heavy loads. They are the best sawhorses I've ever owned. I even use them as safety catches when I do heavy squat exercises because they can be adjusted high enough. I've mounted a 2x6 on the top of them so I have something to clamp my work to and to protect the handsomely painted metal surfaces.

1.0 out of 5 stars Flimsy and DANGEROUS! Here's a true comparison:, February 19, 2007
This review is from: Fulton TS-501Tote-A-Horse Adjustable 25-Inch to 42-Inch Tall Sawhorse, Pair (Tools & Home Improvement)
These horses can and will go in any direction they chose and without warning. And when there's a few hundred pounds of lumber involved, or power tools, that's dangerous and totally unexceptable. Nobody I know uses sawhorses on stairs(necessitating adjustable legs), the pointy feet sink right into anything less than concrete, they swing open when closed and try to fold up when open! I had relegated mine to supporting light trim for staining... that is until someone on my crew pressed them into service to help keep a load of 20' pine flooring out of the dirt. Here's your "Apples-to-apples" comparison: Somewhere around a thousand pounds, On level ground, same height, no wind, One end was supported by two Fulton horses, the other end held up by two Stablemate horses. Left Friday evening, by Monday morning the fultons had folded (like Bambi vs Godzilla!), while the Stablemates stood strong (even with the other end of the stack collapsing). Don't waste your' money or risk anybody's safety! For almost the same price, I swear by the Stablemate Sawhorses; they lock open and closed, they come in two heights (30" & 36") and they're absolutely bomb-proof!... And Amazon has the best price on 'em!

This review is from: Fulton TS-501Tote-A-Horse Adjustable 25-Inch to 42-Inch Tall Sawhorse, Pair (Tools & Home Improvement)
This product is made entirely of steel, they are very sturdy and don't shake at all. Legs fold when the extensions are fully retracted and there is a hole for the wing nut and bolt to hold the extensions in place. Not a problem for me. Four nuts and bolts, big deal! Eight for the pair. They fold up very compactly and barely take up any room at all. They work perfectly in any garage and are so sturdy and compact they're a joy to work with.
