Book Description

July 1, 2007
New England is a runner, jogger, walker paradise, with many enjoyable places to exercise on-foot. If you live in or visit New England, this book will help you find the most irresistible outdoor exercise routes. The goal is to remove all barriers to spending more time outdoors and building fitness, while enjoying the region. The Fun on Foot model is a simple one. The authors believe that one of the easiest and most effective ways to keep fit and control weight is to run, jog, or walk in attractive, comfortable, and interesting environments. There are too many excuses for skipping exercise, which is frequently considered a chore, if not downright unpleasant. Exercise needs to be easy and enjoyable if we are to do it regularly. When armed with the right information, on-foot outings can be interesting and enjoyable. Given a route with attractions, no comfort concerns, and a nice eating and drinking place to finish up, these excursions can even be fun. The authors delved into all the major population areas of Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Maine, Rhode Island, and Vermont, and selected the most enjoyable exercise places. They documented many excellent routes around Greater Boston and such cities as Providence RI, Hartford CT, Stamford CT, Manchester NH, Portsmouth NH, Portland ME, Burlington VT, and Worcester MA. In all, over 40 cities and towns are covered, including the major tourist destinations of Cape Cod, Martha's Vineyard, Nantucket, and Mount Washington. The book has over 120 illustrations, including maps and photographs.

About the Author

Warwick Ford and his wife Nola (a major contributor) were born and raised in Australia, immigrated to Canada where they lived for 12 years, then immigrated to the U.S. in 1996. Their primary home is in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Warwick has several college degrees including a Ph.D. from the University of Toronto. As a Massachusetts based executive of a California company, Warwick spent many years traveling the U.S. One of his biggest challenges was finding the motivation to get out on-foot enough to maintain fitness. Now, he and Nola have teamed to research and document on-foot environments and most enjoyable on-foot routes throughout the U.S. and internationally. Fun on Foot in New England is the first regional follow-up title to the award winning Fun on Foot in America's Cities. Warwick's previous titles were in the technology realm; they include Computer Communications Security and Secure Electronic Commerce, published by Prentice Hall PTR.

5.0 out of 5 stars The Natural Enjoyment of New England, July 22, 2007
This review is from: Fun on Foot in New England (Paperback)
Warwick Ford in "Fun on Foot in New England" has presented the natural beauty and history of New England through a wonderful display of trails and routes through its cities, towns, seaside, and forested areas which runners, joggers, and walkers can enjoy. As a runner with over forty years of pounding the pavement over the same routes, this book has introduced me to some very interesting places to put my running shoes on. Runners love new routes and the challenges they physically and mentally bring, this book gives me all this and more. Mr. Ford definitely understands the mind of a runner.

5.0 out of 5 stars great walking book, June 21, 2009
This review is from: Fun on Foot in New England (Paperback)
As an avid walker I believe this book captures the best walks in New England. I wish I had it on my last visit to Portsmouth, NH. The walks in the book are long (many 7-9 miles)so they can also be used for biking and jogging or shortened for a more typical walk. The authors incorporate info on how to get to many start points by public transportation which is great for the city walks. If you are into walking, biking and/or jogging outside of your immediate area, this is a great book to help you find the best trails.
