Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2-Entries in a series that explores beginning math concepts. Each volume begins with two pages of suggestions for adults to use to insure that youngsters "get the most" from the books. All three titles use the same type of colorful drawings to present puzzles, mazes, and games that require finding or matching items or discovering differences. For instance, Numbers instructs readers to find objects such as shirts hanging on a clothesline with designated numbers of buttons on them. Patterns asks youngsters to match up items such as pairs of socks from one side of a double-page spread to the other. Shapes has readers find the odd shape in a grouping. All of the books are clever, colorful, and age appropriate, to be used independently or with an adult. However, there are some drawbacks to solo use. Some of the puzzles do not provide clear directions. In Shapes, the "Viewpoints" spread offers one view from the floor and one from the ceiling, which will be difficult for most students to comprehend. Also, a few of the shapes get lost in the gutter. In addition, it is not easy to determine the differences between squares and cubes and between circles and spheres. Overall, these are not priority purchases.
