4.0 out of 5 stars An incredible book that makes drawing more enjoyable...
I read this book several times as a child, and liked it more as I grew. Loomis makes pencil sketching enjoyable & immediately productive. Great book, buy it if you can.

3.0 out of 5 stars Fun With APencil, May 23, 2006
This review is from: Fun with a Pencil (Hardcover)
I am a professional artist and long time fan of Andrew Loomis.I particularly like his figure work. When I ordered Fun with A Pencil, I thought that there were some quite good examples of figure drawing in it, due to a site I had found showing fine excerpts of figure drawing associated with this book (I have since not been able to find this site again, though I've tried). Thus when I received FWAP, I was a bit disappointed that there are no examples of figure work at all. Nonetheless, it is a Loomis classic and a very good treatise on general beginner drawing. It ranges from numerous character-type head drawings to minor figure construction (very little though), and some general perspective.Decker Library, the seller, was very professional in handling the order, and the book is in the exact pristine condition that they stated online. For those fans of Andrew Loomis, this book is worth having ,if for no other reason, as a collectible of the legacy of a great artist and illustrator.

I have many wonderful art books, and this is my favorite. I have had this book for many years and what delight is between the binding. Simple step-by-step explanation makes this book for all ages. Not only does it explain the basics of drawing head and other features, it entices even those who are not artisically inclined. From beginner to advanced, you will find yourself drawing those cute little heads and even bodies as a doodle that lasts a lifetime.

2.0 out of 5 stars Got a scanned copy of an original., August 10, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Fun With a Pencil (Paperback)
Bought this and received text printed from the on-demand service Lulu. Their printing service is excellent, but this book was a crappy scan from an original. Be aware that you may not be getting the real deal.

Those issues aside, the book is very fun and covers the Loomis head construction method well and includes good instruction on perspective. These topics are covered more completely in his other books, but are appropriate for the subject of cartooning. Would have given it 4 stars if not for the sketchy print quality.
