Smash or Trash is the game where players make up hysterical new lyrics to popular hit music. Are you witty enough to write a song about fast food, homework, doing the laundry or perhaps rabid squirrels? Have you enjoyed chart-topping music from recent decades? If so, then this is definitely the game for you. A good sense of humor is better than a great singing voice when you play Smash or Trash. Put your creativity to the test as you compete for top praise from the critics (other players) who will declare each song you write to be a Smash hit or just plain Trash.  Every player will get both a Songs card and a Subject card at the beginning of each round. Players are then given time to write as many new lyrics as they like about the subject to the tune of one of the listed songs. The songs are performed and players vote for those they like best. Once all the rounds are completed the player with the most points wins.

We've played this game with people aged 10-65. I love how this game brings out a player's creativity and silliness and often surprises the group! My usually very serious brother put together a great song about driving in traffic and road rage and sang it to the tune of The Proclaimers "500 Miles." He had it rhyming and everything! Ha!

The point of the game is to make up your own humorous lyrics to popular songs. You get to choose from several songs each round, and a lot of different genres are covered, new and old, so there is always something you recognize. And you don't even have to know the songs that well since you make up your own words anyways.

It isn't as hard as it sounds. I ended up being surprised by my own creativity very impressed with what my friends came up with.

Everyone judges everyone else with secret scoring cards, but the point isn't to be super-competative. You end up sort of grading each person on their own curve, relative to how well they've done before, so everyone gets some good scores and some not-so-good scores.

The game can be a lot of fun at a party when the liquid courage gets flowing, people feel a little less inhibited about making up silly lyrics or singing in front of their friends. And if people want to recite their lyrics instead of sing, or only be judges, that is allowed too.

I always look forward to playing this one.

I wasn't sure about this game at first...singing in public? And in front of friends? Not just in the shower or in the car? Perhaps I am just shy, but as soon as I overcame this, it was a lot of fun! Humor and creativity beat out musical talent, since that is what this game is all about. Everyone takes a turn singing and judging at every round, it's like karaoke, but if somebody's off key - it doesn't drag on forever!! And if somebody's good, well, hey that's just a bonus!
