Editorial Reviews

The first new Blasters release since 2005! This release has all the original members except for Keith Wyatt replacing Dave Alvin on guitar. The Blasters have included more blues on this release than any of their other previous releases, and still get some rockabilly, country, bluegrass and even mariachi songs in the mix. Phil Alvin sings a duet with Exene Cervenka on the Johnny and June Cash classic Jackson.

Just like John Fogerty, Phil Alvin has a unique voice that is immediately recognizable. Fogerty Fanatic  |  3 reviewers made a similar statement

This is more than homage to a great era in music, it is a living, breathing extension of that style. Mark Lee Itzkowitz  |  1 reviewer made a similar statement

5.0 out of 5 stars Blasting all the way back!!! July 7, 2012
Format:Audio CD
Blasters and roots/blues fans should be dancing in the street right now...what we have here is an honest to goodness Blasters album. For the past twenty five years there have been lots of great blasters related releases...Dave Alvin records, Phil Alvin Records, a hybrid Blasters/Phil Alvin Record, Live Records and even an actuall Blasters studio record (4-11-44). While most of these releases have been special in their own way, none of them had "the sound" of those classic first three Blasters records from the early 80's....which in the words of Bob Dylan "was magic"! Dave's stuff tends to be more "folkie", Phil's stuff is more "pre-war" and the last Blasters studio record had a more rock and roll sound. Well "Fun On Saturday Night" is a full fledged return to the "classic blasters sound", in both style and song selection. It is a propulsive mix of rocking R&B, chicago blues and country/hillbilly played as only the Blasters can with the added bonus of a few special treats mixed in. These treats being a fantastic Phil/Excene duet on the Johnny Cash classic "jackson" and mariachi version of "Marie Marie". This album is smokes from start to finish. Roots and Blues music lovers are gonna love this. Start spreading the news, the Blasters are back!!

5.0 out of 5 stars America Needs More of This Kind of Music July 4, 2012
Format:Audio CD|Amazon Verified Purchase
I'll have to admit that I'm a biased reviewer. As a Creedence Clearwater Revival fan, who was crushed when CCR split up in 1972, I was in heaven the evening I discovered the Blasters at Club 88 on Pico Blvd. in Los Angeles in the late 70s. Just like John Fogerty, Phil Alvin has a unique voice that is immediately recognizable. Though this album is not filled with as much of the roots rock one might expect from the Blasters, it is none the less a tour de force of American blues, country and rock. Stand out tracks for me are 'Penny', 'Breath of My Love' and 'Jackson', a duet with Exene of the well known Johnny and June Carter Cash tune. This is one of those albums that will grow on a listener and stand the test of time for years to come. By the way, Phil Alvin is back in the U.S. and ready to go after a mighty scary illness in Spain. Phil, please take care of yourself! We need more Blasters music for many, many years to come!

5.0 out of 5 stars It`s about time! August 25, 2012

It`s about time we got a new album from these guys and it sounds great, check out the samples.I don`t even miss Dave Alvin anymore. My favorite song on the CD so far is "Breath Of My Love" a darkly humerus tune,a particular line sung by backing vocals cracked me up..I wont spoil it for you you will have to hear for yourself. The content of this song is also a little eerie considering what happened to Phil during the overseas tour this album. There are some great rock-a-billy tunes on here and it`s great to hear Phil playing his harp and doing some Yodeling again.I have to point out the cardboard wallet the CD comes in is pretty thin, more like a fancy mailer that folds open, just preparing you.I guess it`s no big deal it`s a new Blaster`s CD I should just be glad to have the disc witch ever way it is packaged.
