5.0 out of 5 stars Experimental guitar with bits of happiness, November 9, 2001
This review is from: Fun of Watching Fireworks (Audio CD)
Imagine good friends of yours are extremely skilled musicials who love music with all their hearts and their favorite thing to do in the whole universe is to just start playing and create music that is pleasant to listen to, nice to relax to, and insane to dance to. That's what American Analog Set's music is like - experimental guitar with weird but unobtrusive additions of instruments ranging from cybals to weird electronic keyboard effects and even playing some recorded stuff backwards. It's definitely not New Age, so don't get scared. I recommend it highly for people who like guitar-based non-pop music. AAS's music is like one end of a spectrum which features hard guitar (folk) rock on its other end. The Fun of Watching Fireworks is thoroughly interesting, varies at least expected points, and provides hour of amusements for contstant relistening. Get it, listen to it, enjoy every note of it.

5.0 out of 5 stars A stunning album that casts everyone under it's droney spell, September 8, 1999

Brilliant. Simply brilliant. I love this album. The way it lets the listener get lost in the music is simply stunning. Every listen is a pleasure and when the album is over it is hard to not begin it again. The music has a timeless feel to it.

No, they're not that obscure, but TAAS lies far beyond the mainstream. I cannot think of another band with such deep compositional strength. There aren't any riffs that stand on their own, but everything taken together is pure brilliance in timing and subtle interwoven melody. On a simple level, it's just damn good chill music and something I'm always happy to put on at the end of the evening or first thing in the morning.

Know By Heart is probably the most consistent album, start to finish, and is filled with greatness. I always play that for newbies first. But this album has some of the greatest gems in their library. Gone to Earth is a work of art and will probably go down in my top 10 songs of all time. It has so many wonderful pieces to it, it alone is worth the price of the album (though there is plenty else to be admired).

Get this and Know By Heart and say hello to your new favorite band.

4.0 out of 5 stars Dreamy, Minimalist, Bedtime Melodies, November 15, 2001
This review is from: Fun of Watching Fireworks (Audio CD)
I saw AAS at South by Southwest back in '97 or '98 and was enthralled by their deliberately paced electronic music. Having had already listened to the CD a few times prior to their show it was a pleasure to see and meet them (they couldn't have been nicer!). For months this is what I fell asleep to, which doesn't mean it bores you to death, but rather that it is mellow, dreamy music completely stripped down and totally hypnotic. Start here with their first album and then see how they have progressed.
