5.0 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Good Product for the $$$!
This DVD player is incredibly light(as light as lifting a box of cereal). It is not the best looking and most stylish DVD player out there;but it has a nice black color and it meshes well with my black entertainment center. The player is easy to install though I had no luck yet getting it to work with my cable box. It plays my DVD-R recordable disks without any problems...

And this DVD player, unfortunately for us, provides a reason why that saying exists. Like another reviewer, after about 3-4 months of light use, the player no longer consistently recognized DVDs. The local service center suggested just buying a new player, as the cost to repair would exceed the original price.

I read a bunch of reviews on different dvd players. No matter which price range, it seemed like something could go wrong. So why not spend the least amount? For $40, this isn't a bad little machine at all...it doesn't have any fancy shmancy features, but it plays everything I put into it with no problems. I just hope it lasts :)

The feature set and usability were good, it just broke down and wasn't worth the money paid. We'll go with one of the mainstream brands next time. . .costs a little more, but worth it!!

1.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely a rip off, September 27, 2004
This review is from: Funai Symphonic SD300D DVD Player , Black (Electronics)
After several months, this player no longer would recognize CDs or DVDs. The manufacturer suggested rebooting. That did nothing. The service center they recommended in my area said to would probably cost more to fix than to buy a new one.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent Quality for the price., May 7, 2004

I knew Funai is a reputable company. I just trusted the good name and bought it last week. Me and my wife both are very satisfied with the quality of picture and performance. Remote is easy to use. Since my TV has only a coaxial cable input, I had to buy an RF modulator(Philips) from Walmart at $18. So I paid a total of $58.

3.0 out of 5 stars You (sorta) get what you pay for, December 10, 2005
This review is from: Funai Symphonic SD300D DVD Player , Black (Electronics)
This unit seemed a good value at first, but after some time had passed it did show its bad side. It has serious issues in correctly playing dual-layer dvd's, and on occasion freezes up and has to be unplugged to reset it. This does not, however, fix the dual-layer dvd problem, which persists no matter what. And yes, those same dvd's do play perfectly on other players.

The biggest "gotcha" on this product is a complete LACK of any sort of help or response from the manufacturer to fix these problems. No fixes, upgrades, suggestions, nothing. Just "oops, guess you better buy another one". This unit was put out there as a throwaway, and if you just need something to play a few dvd's until you can buy a real player, this is a pretty cheap way to do it. If you're wanting this to be there for the long haul, you'll be gravely disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Funai Symphonic SD300 DVD player is a quality product!, February 5, 2004
By A Customer
This review is from: Funai Symphonic SD300D DVD Player , Black (Electronics)
My primary goals in purchasing a new DVD player were a.) playing DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW, DVD-RW discs, plus regular DVD video compatibility; b.) price; and c.) quality.

In all respects, I feel I purchased one of the best, most robust (and least expensive) DVD players currently available. The SD300D player is very lightweight, has a small footprint (meaning it takes up little shelf space, compared to other DVD players we have), and functions perfectly out of the box. The buttons on the player's faceplate are easy to push, and spaced apart for easy touching. It has also lived up to the broad range of bells and whistles which are described above. Additional information can be found on the manufacturer's web site at http://www.funai-corp.com/sd300d.html

Kudos to the design of the remote, too. Unlike sleek, stylish remote controls from other major brands, the SD300D's remote is very straightforward, somewhat basic and very easy to work with. The buttons aren't crammed together; they're easy to touch. The remote's layout was well-planned, too. (The remote control wasn't considered when purchasing the DVD player, so it came as a very pleasant surprise.) I can't comment on the true range of the remote, although we usually use it from 12-14 feet away.

There was only two reasons I assigned 4 stars (and not 5 stars): The loading tray is very light and seemingly fragile. In my opinion, this tray need to be loaded carefully. If you intend for children to use the machine, or aren't very gentle with hardware yourself, you may want a more durable product. Otherwise, this is a well-built product. The extras, such as MP3 playing capabilities and Parental Lock (akin to a V-chip), were a nice bonus. And the audio output options were excellent for this low price. [Virtual Surround and DTS Stream Output (Digital Out) via Digital Out (Coaxial RCA Pin Jack) and Analog Out (RCA Pin Jacks x2).] (Note: We are *not* using a Home Theater system with this player, so take that into consideration when purchasing this player. If your audiophile tastes require a better sound system/options, then do your homework first. You may want a player with more options.)

I would highly recommend this player.

About the company: Funai Corporation is a Japanese company. Funai Corporation markets the consumer electronic brands of Sylvania, Symphonic (which pertains to this Funai Symphonic SD300D DVD/CD player), Funai and Emerson.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good value, August 12, 2004
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Funai Symphonic SD300D DVD Player , Black (Electronics)
This is a basic, inexpensive DVD player that plays NTSC DVD (Region 1 or ALL only), DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW; MP3 and audio CDs. It does not support the intermediate VCD or SVCD formats, or PAL encoding.

The DVD player's pause and sleep functions do not work particularly well. If you pause the DVD player for too long, it will turn itself off and lose your place in the movie. If you forget to turn off the DVD player, it will fall asleep but may require that you pull out the power cord to reset the player.

While the Funai Symphonic SD300D player is a good value, consumers may find DVD players that also play PAL-encoded discs (great for multi-cultural families); and DivX (for compressed movies), VCD and SVCD formats (to view content from the many people who still only have CD burners), for not much more money.

Great dvd player. It plays about everything I can put into it. You can't beat the price of $39.99! It even came with batteries for the remote control.
