Book Description

The technique of using fiber-optic instrumentation for sinus surgery is becoming more popular. By going through the nose, there are far fewer complications than when traditional open surgical techniques were used. The authors are respected in the field of otolaryngology and this reference manual should be useful to both trainees and practitioners.

5.0 out of 5 stars Review of Stammbergers's FESS, December 1, 1999

This review is from: Functional Endoscopic Sinus Surgery: The Messerklinger Technique (Hardcover)
This is a well written and thoroughly illustrated book which is a must for both E.N.T. physicians and radiologists. The nasal cavity anatomy and its physiology are thoroughly reviewed. This book literally is a handbook on how to perform functional endoscopic sinus surgery through the nasal cavity. The anatomical correlation between actual cadaveric skulls and plain radiographs and CT scans provides the first time reader with an accurate depiction of the anterior and posterior ostiomeatal complexes which both occupy a space less than 2 to 3 cubic centimeters but is literally packed with small bony structures which are key in FESS procedures. More importantly the information provided gives the reader a thorough understanding as to the complex nature of chronic and recurrent sinusitis which plagues the majority of the population in the world. FESS allows surgical procedures to occur through the nose without the traditional surgical incision of skin and removal of bone to reach the underlying affected structures. Literally a thin tube slightly larger than sphaghetti negotiates its way into the nasal cavity through a bony labyrinth in order to reach certain openings and passages which for the most part are narrowed due to anatomical variations in the small bony and cartilaginous structures which make up the nasal cavity. Actual anatomical pictures as viewed through the endoscope are provided so that the reader is actually there during the surgery and can experience what the endoscopic surgeon views. The radiographic anatomy is thoroughly covered in this textbook and to a degree which even the standard radiological and neuroradiological textbooks do not cover. The illustrations are superb. This is the Bible when it comes to the topic of FESS and also the topic of anatomy of the nasal cavity. This is a must read textbook for a residents in training in both E.N.T. surgery and radiology. The language, technical jargon, and disease processes makes this text too technical for the general public.
