I greatly enjoyed Fundamentals of Academic Writing (1) with my High Beginning ESL class this semester. The book is subdivided into 9 chapters, each of which focuses on a specific grammar point (S.Present, S.Past, S.Future, etc.) and also on a specific topic to write about (About myself, Most Important day of My Life, Most Memorable Trip, etc.)

The book is up-to-date and the choice of topics is rather interesting on this level. One of the great things about the book is that it teaches (and then consistently reviews) the paragraph structure.

There are too many grammar exerices, in my opinion (something that has to be done and looked at in grammar class), but you don't have to do them all.

I recommend this book to people working with lower-level students.
