Book Description

July 21, 2011 0321777026 978-0321777027 1

Adobe Flash Professional is the most popular software available for creating animations for the Web. Most people start using Flash to create vector-based animations that output small file sizes perfect for the Web. Later they want to branch out into creating rich interactive experiences for websites and mobile devices, and for that they need to learn ActionScript.

Doug Winnie draws on the experience he’s gained from his years as an educator to teach not only what ActionScript can do, but also to show how the code works. This gives the reader a deeper understanding of how ActionScript functions, and gives them the power to come up with original solutions when creating their own projects.

Doug’s book dives right into the concepts of manipulating Flash objects and the fundamentals of functions and mathematical operators. After presenting events and using scripts to control the Flash timeline, classes and conditionals are covered in depth.

The final part of the book covers creating desktop applications with Adobe AIR, developing mobile applications, and working with external code libraries. Real-world projects are sprinkled generously throughout the book and Appendices include information on debugging, deciphering documentation, and using Adobe Flash Builder as an ActionScript development environment.

5.0 out of 5 stars Best actionscript book ever written July 23, 2012
By Paul
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I own 5 or so books on actionscript, and this book is by far the best at teaching you from the basest beginnings to methods and other, more complex coding principles. This will not be the last book you buy on 3.0, but it should be the first. The author also has a series of about 50 videos on tv.adobe.com that run parallel to this book. I'd highly encourage you to check them out along with Fundamentals of actionscript.

This is the first book that made coding in flash intuitive to me.

5.0 out of 5 stars Overall an excellent book June 7, 2013
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
It's very comprehensive, well organized, and very friendly to read. The book says it's required you know how to work with a Flash project, but you really just have to know the very basics like how to work with the timeline, manipulating properties of objects, and how to test your project. The best part of this book is how the author assumes you have never seen a line of code in your life.

However there is a logic error in one piece of code the author has written. If you have the book already, on page 92, those lines reading 'e.target' should really be 'e.currentTarget'. That's my only complaint, otherwise the book is pretty perfect for the actionscript newbie.
