Book Description

0894645358 978-0894645358 January 1991
This text explains, in engineering rather than abstract mathematical terms, how to apply the fundamentals of electrostatics in order to design practical devices. Each section concentrates on a single concept in electrostatics, which is first discussed and then applied to a particular device or effect. The examples include copy machines, smoke detectors, high-speed nonimpact printers for computers, and the electrofusion of living cells. The work is organized by the scale of the electrostatic effect. It deals with electrostatic fields in a uniform linear medium, introduces particles into the field, then allows for a complex continuum, and describes the interaction between electrostatic devices and external circuits.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher

This reprint of the 1986 and 1991 edition is the most widely used textbook on electrostatics available today. Based on the author's course at the University of Illinois. Detailed explanations of concepts, applications to numerous practical applications, problem sets, and a survey of dozens of application areas ranging from electronics to medicine. Every principle and technique is illustrated by an example drawn from current practice in commercial or laboratory work. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

From the Author

Ignorance of electrostatics might have been acceptable when radiation and antennas were the overriding concerns in applied electromagnetism, but today there are large industries depending on a clear understanding of electrostatics for developing practical devices. Although this book grew out of an upper-level university course, it should be helpful for practicing engineers and scientists. To facilitate the needs of specialists who cannot work through the entire book, the epilogue serves as a guide to selected industries, sciences, and technologies using electrostatics. --This text refers to the Paperback edition.

5.0 out of 5 stars Biggest little book on Electrostatics, December 6, 2008
By
M.F. "Reader" (Burlington, VT USA) - See all my reviews
This book is a great introduction to electrostatics. This book has a comprehensive overview of many practical electrostatic problems, theories, and everyday applications. It was a great read (first time I've ever said that about a text book).

I find myself reaching for this book to look up equations, and or applications rather than my bigger, thicker, more "comprehensive", more expensive text books. This text is simple enough to understand that students with pre-calculus math background can understand it, yet it provides enough detail that graduate level Electrical Engineering students use it as a reference.

This book is a great addition to any Electrical or Mechanical Engineer's library.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good book in a field with little coverage, August 25, 2009
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
There really are not many applied electrostatics books out there, so your choices are limited. Among those limited choices, this is a good one.

Most notable is that this book really does stay true to the "Applied" in the title. This book has example after example of actual machines and processes that use electrostatics. From air filters to ink jet printers, actually seeing real world cases (with diagrams and photos) was very helpful for me.

It is clear that the author has a huge amount of experience and offers much helpful guidance beyond the standard formulas.

If you are into electrostatics and are looking to supplement your dry textbook, then I'd recommend this book.
