Book Description

September 2, 1993
This beginning graduate-level text treats in detail the relations between internal, potential, and kinetic energy in the atmosphere. The first part of the book describes the generation, transformation, and dissipation of the basic energy quantities in the global atmosphere and the subdivision of these forms of energy in a number of energy reservoirs. The second part covers energetics in open domains and presents the major results of observational studies. Individual chapters discuss energetics of the tropics and the Southern Hemisphere and of such phenomena as the jet stream and stationary eddies. This will be a valuable text for advanced students in atmospheric dynamics.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Written for the atmospheric science graduate student. . . . a somewhat detailed mathematical framework with research results obtained since the 1950s." --Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society

"I wish to congratulate the authors for producing this book. It provides an excellent description of the atmospheric energetics and their applications to various facets of the general circulation....Most of the mathematical derivations in this book are based on first principles and so are simple and lucid. This will not only help graduate students, for whom the book is meant, but also researchers from other branches of the atmospheric sciences....At the end of the book, there are useful problems and exercises for the readers to solve. To sum up, this book covers well the energetics of most aspects of the general circulations of both hemispheres and contains many useful derivations and diagrams based on computation. The book will be useful to researchers as well as graduate students. " --Bulletin of the American Meteorological Society

"This is a well written textbook of atmospheric energetics for students of graduate courses in atmospheric sciences, and its content is rich enough to also make it a useful manual for professionals in this field....Should find its place in libraries of Physics and Earth Science departments of universities and other scientific institutions, as well as in many personal book collections of scientists dealing with the physics of planetary atmosopheres." --PAGEOPH
