2.0 out of 5 stars Neither academically rigorous nor practically useful, March 2, 2011

This review is from: Fundamentals of Business Statistics, International Edition (with CD-ROM and InfoTrac): 0 (International Student Edition) (Paperback)
No academic credentials are given for any of the authors, and it is perfectly clear from the examples they set that they have no significant business experience either. This leaves it unclear both what their qualifications are for writing a textbook, and what the textbook's intended readership is.

Nothing is proved in this textbook. Annoyingly, though, in several places there are claims to have 'shown' that a certain result is true in an earlier section, when in fact that section merely STATES the result.

The examples are not chosen from the authors' (presumably non-existent) business experience, but mainly from the pages of newspapers and magazines. In teaching from the book I often have to say, 'If you come across a problem like this, don't approach it in the way that the authors suggest, or the following negative consequences will ensue and you'll be out of a job.' For example, the textbook suggest standardizing golf ball flight distance by precisely controlling the MEAN flight distance, with no control at all over the STANDARD DEVIATION!

On the plus side, the book is reasonably light, inexpensive, and covers a relatively useful range of statistic methods. But I still wouldn't buy it.
