MATLAB - FLEXIBILITY - AFFORDABILITY! These are the Lonngren et al advantages over similar texts. The new second edition provides greatly enhanced flexibility to the instructor faced with a one-term course, as well as those with a second term, whether required or elective, to continue using the same book. How? Optional new topics and extended discussion of core topics are provided in PDF files on the Student CD that match the text's new 2-color format. Additional topics can be added per instructor desires: just send SciTech the material for approval and it will be set into the 2-color PDF format! MATLAB is further capitalized on in this edition. A self-paced MATLAB Tutorial on the Student CD uses EM examples and notation, removing any burden on the instructor to teach MATLAB. MATLAB is then used in even more Animations (over 50, with code provided), student "Projects," and a fine-tuning of Examples, Problems, and Figures that employ MATLAB. An "Applications" folder on the CD further enhances the student's understanding and appreciation of the EM principles in the text. The unique "Shareware Community" allows and encourage all instructors to submit their own Animations, Projects, Applications and cool web links so that all may share in dynamically expanding resources to motivate a firm understanding and appreciation of Electromagnetic Theory The Second Edition, based on user feedback, is available January 2007. Attractive 2-color design Tighter page design and new paper - a more compact, lay-open book! MATLAB self-paced tutorial with EM examples on CD Supplemental chapters and sections in PDF files on CD "Applications" supplemental chapter in PDF on CD "Projects" requiring multi-steps problem-solving in MATLAB Redrawn 2-color figures, clean equation fonts

1.0 out of 5 stars Awful, November 10, 2010
This review is from: Fundamentals of Electromagnetics with MATLABĀ®, Second Edition (Hardcover)
Maybe it is the way this material is presented in class, but this book is nearly impossible to grasp. I'm a college student attempting to take an EMAGs course with this book. The book has no support group anywhere online, the CD attached is completely useless, and the problems in the end chapter aren't even problems that have examples to go off of. I don't see how anyone could viably stomach this book and call it a masterpiece worth 5 stars. There is 0 online help anywhere. The website the book recommends is not even fully functional or operational for that matter. I have found much more suitable books then this one out there. There is also a lack of MATLAB examples / solutions in this book. It claims that this is Fundamentals of Electromagnetics with MATLAB, but I see little to no use of MATLAB anywhere in this book. The book is also ridiculously tiny, which is not that great for an introductory course. A book teaching an intro course should be much longer then this one.

Buyer beware. I do not agree with any of the other reviewer's reviews. Also, I am not trying to slander this book. I just can't seem to grasp the ideas of an intro course, when I am a junior level Electrical Engineer with a 3.6 GPA.

1.0 out of 5 stars Worst textbook I have ever used, May 10, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Fundamentals of Electromagnetics with MATLABĀ®, Second Edition (Hardcover)
This is one of the worst textbooks I have ever had the displeasure of using.

The format is inconsistent, sometimes "examples" are presented as derivation, so you get confused as to what the fundamental equations are.

Sometimes very fundamental equations are placed in the middle of a paragraph that would not be seen without reading through the book entirely. As any college student knows, it is VERY rare to do this. Every other textbook author has figured out to put important equations in bold or something, why didn't Lonngren?

The end of chapter problems are next to impossible to complete solely with the material presented in the chapter. There are no examples of the problems, and many of the problems are very poorly worded. To top it off, a startlingly large amount of the solutions in the back are (completely) wrong.

I find myself often wondering if Lonngren and his editors even read through this book after writing it. How can you have a second edition without doing this? Oh yeah, to rip people off.

Frankly, I think the people who rated this book highly must have received a different book. I have had lots of textbooks, many of which I have read quite a bit of. This is by FAR the worst.

1.0 out of 5 stars Fundamentals of Electromagnetics, February 14, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
This review is from: Fundamentals of Electromagnetics with MATLABĀ®, Second Edition (Hardcover)
This book is riddled with errors and incomplete explanations for the topics covered. It is generally example deficient for the problems given in the end of chapters. The choice of notation is odd and does not align very well with either calc 3 or physics notation. For the price tag I would hope that they could at least proof read this book better and do better that 3 color printing. This is a poor product.
