3.0 out of 5 stars An old and dated textbook--though perhaps of historical interest, December 30, 2011
By
Ulfilas (Washington, DC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Fundamentals of Elementary Particle Physics (McGraw-Hill series in fundamentals of physics) (Hardcover)
This 226-page textbook was assigned for a one credit undergraduate physics honors course that I took almost forty years ago. At the time, it might have been considered up to date. One of the final sections asks "Do quarks exist?" and delved into efforts to find individual free quarks. The possibility of the confined quarks now familiar to us is also addressed, as are SU(3) multiplets. Elementary aspects of scattering theory, Feynman diagrams, and weak, strong, and electromagnetic interactions are discussed. Violation of parity, as well as charge and time reversal invariance are touched on. In addition to theory, a number of important experiments, complete with photographs and diagrams of the facilities and scattering paths, are described. The data from a number of scattering experiments are plotted and compared with theory.
