Good, as 'required' textbooks go,
By
This review is from: Fundamentals of Fluid Mechanics (Hardcover)
In describing this textbook, one should carefully delineate between the authors text and the publishers product. The authors text is excellent: the publisher's product is not. I especially like Chapter Six's Differential Analysis of a Fluid Flow. This explanation is much easier to follow than what's found in any of my other fluids textbooks. Now the ugly rub is that this is a Wiley textbook, so it's exorbitantly expensive, uses Imperial units obfuscate example explanations, and it includes Wiley's terrible databank problems. From the forth edition onward, there seems little or no real correlation between the text and problems in the chapter, so I assume that is when the publisher switched from the author's problems to their own test bank. When I finish this class and sell back the expensive textbook (for whatever I can still get), I'll buy an old edition for reference. I see that non-current editions are selling for about 2% of what the new edition goes for, which is a better reflection of real value in the market (as opposed to artificially inflated prices for 'required' texts).

Formatting Problems,

This review is from: Fundamentals of Fluid Mechanics (Paperback)
There are problems with the formatting of the paperback book. Words are oddly spaced, spaces appear in the middle of words, and some words even overlap. The hardcover version does not have these problems. I do not expect such basic problems to exist in a book published by a reputable publisher.

Same content but more difficult to read.,

Something strange happened with the formatting when they created this book. Quite often words will be broken up with big empty spaces (sometimes the size of a word) in the middle. For example, surface becomes surf ace, and device is de vice. Sometimes two words are printed on top of each other in the same space. The broken up words often occur several times on each page, but the overlapping text comes up less frequently. The content is the same as in the regular text, but it's a little jarring and sometimes confusing to read.

Does any one know if the hardcover has the same formatting issues as the paperback version?Paperback version has many issues where words are printed overlapping or there are issues with text having many spaces (ie for ever is forever).

This book has major formatting issues. Literally, almost every paragraph has at least one word split by a space. You can open the book to a random page to find dozens of these errors. It's very annoying, and unacceptable for a textbook.

If you don't mind the printing,

I don't mind the black-and-white, but I still prefer the hardcover ones. On the whole is OK, but some of the printing and spacing are not that good. Some words are too far apart, even a single word. For example "Flu id Me cha nics". Some words overlap with one another, especially words with units. Imagine "m" printed on the word "meters" or "3.142" on "meters". This book is lighter and cheaper, but bulkier. Sounds ironic, but is true that this book is bigger in size.

Worst book ever... there is spaces in words. Here is an example, "f or fluids at rest we kno w that the force must be perpendicular...". That was me just opening the book and reading the first sentence i came to, there is an error in almost every sentence. The text editor wont let me put more than one space at a time so the spaces are more extreme than my example. And there is no table or conversions on the backside of the covers. Would return it but need it for my class cant go without it. Dont buy it, this book is not worth the trouble.

Almost ruinous production quality,

My copy of this book comes with very bad spacing issues. Every word with a v in it and sometimes other words have several spaces inserted in the middle of the word. (i.e. very becomes v____ery). There are also issues with text overlapping. This makes the book very hard to read. I do not know if this is a fault of just this copy or of the entire edition, but I'm very dissatisfied.

kindle version,

This review is from: Fundamentals of Fluid Mechanics (Kindle Edition)
the kindle version of this book is way too expensive for the lack of practicality you get with it. first of all there is an important table in the front of the print version that is absent in the kindle version. some of the figures are unreadable as well. i would say that the benefits that come with owning the kindle version outweigh the negatives but NOT at this price. i feel ripped off and i now question why i got a kindle at all.
