Book Description

June 30, 2006 0471210064 978-0471210061 1
An essential foundation for the practice of forensic anthropology

This text is the first of its level written in more than twenty years. It serves as a summary and guide to the core material that needs to be mastered and evaluated for the practice of forensic anthropology.

The text is divided into three parts that collectively provide a solid base in theory and methodology:

  • Part One, "Background Setting for Forensic Anthropology," introduces the field and discusses the role of forensic anthropology in historic context.
  • Part Two, "Towards Personal Identification," discusses initial assessments of skeletal remains; determining sex, age, ancestral background, and stature; and skeletal markers of activity and life history.
  • Part Three, "Principal Anthropological Roles in Medical-Legal Investigation," examines trauma; the postmortem period; professionalism, ethics, and the expert witness; and genetics and DNA.

The critical and evaluative approach to the primary literature stresses the inherent biological constraints on degrees of precision and certainty, and cautions about potential pitfalls. The practical focus, coupled with theoretical basics, make Fundamentals of Forensic Anthropology ideal for upper-level undergraduates and graduate students in biological anthropology as well as forensic scientists in allied fields of medical-legal investigation.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"I enthusiastically recommend Fundamentals of Forensic Anthropology as reading in upper level forensic anthropology courses…both strongly theoretical and practical.  I also recommend it to all forensic-science professionals as a helpful reference to have at hand." (The Applied Anthropologist, Spring 2008, reviewed by Gabrielle Jones)

"[The author] sets the standard for how textbooks should be engagingly written with clarity and humor." (reviewed by Jeri DeYoung, The Applied Anthropologist, Spring 2008)

"…a valuable addition to the forensic science literature…essential." (CHOICE, June 2007)

"...an important contribution from a well versed and experienced forensic anthropologist, and will serve as a useful summary of the state of the science today." (American Journal of Physical Anthropology, March 2007)

"...the first of its level written in more than twenty years...an essential foundation for the practice of forensic anthropology." (SirReadaLot.org, August 2006)

5.0 out of 5 stars a solid foundation to the discipline, but not for beginners, February 6, 2012
By
This review is from: Fundamentals of Forensic Anthropology (Advances in Human Biology) (Hardcover)
Klepinger provides an excellent overview and summary of forensic anthropology, but as she cautions readers in the introduction, "this book will NOT make you an expert!" The book is targeted towards upper division anthro students (and, I suppose, grad students) - those without some understanding of statistics and human anatomy would do well to look elsewhere. These cautions mentioned, there is an abundance of methodologies and principles critical to the science of forensic anthropology that are clearly explained with a detailed bibliography that will keep one reading on the subject for the foreseeable future.

The opening chapters on the background and history of the discipline were interesting in that they gave some perspective on the subject (forensic anthropology is, relatively speaking, a new discipline, and quality control in its practice "has been a nagging problem," hence Klepinger's warning in the introduction.) I thought the most interesting chapters of the book addressed the determination of gender and the accompanying challenges with this (espeically with pre-pubescent children), and age estimation (again, with children and suprisingly to me, the elderly.) The variation, statistical confidence and especially the way in which models to determine gender and age were developed were clearly explained, and the studies from which they were developed are included in the bibliography. Chapters on skeletal markers and ancestry (what non-specialists refer to as "race") were less interesting, if only because I was already familiar with this material on a fundamental level. Her chapter on post-mortem events was a great primer, and in fact has led me to read more on forensic entomology as a result.

For the ghoulish (or passingly curious), I recommend Bones: A Forensic Detective's Casebook, Death's Acre: Inside the Legendary Forensic Lab the Body Farm Where the Dead Do Tell Tales or Never Suck A Dead Man's Hand: Curious Adventures of a CSI. If, however, you are a more serious student of the field (or have a more technical curiosity), this is an excellent overview.
