Great for the theory, not so much for the application,

I really enjoyed this book that I used in conjunction with a university summer course. I thought it was very well written and informative. The only drawback is that it is not written for any specific GIS software (e.g. ArcGIS) so it has to be very general and unbiased in its explanation of concepts.

This book reads as a collection of lecture notes. The organization of the book has not fit either of the two classes I have taken which required its' use. There are typos in the mathematical formula. Illustrations were not always conveniently located in relation to the relevant text. Given the shocking price for new copies, these are not minor quibbles: how can a textbook of such poor quality in design, and so lacking in quality, be of use? I would recommend Bolstad for an introduction to GIS over this book, for too many reasons to list here. Gis Fundamentals: A First Text on Geographic Information Systems
