Review
“The authors direct their bibliography toward health educators developing new curricula and practitioners treating the elderly, but they also provide a source useful to all who are interested in the increasingly important topic of the health of older persons. The book includes 914 annotated references divided into 12 chapters, 8 of which focus on geriatric health care in specific areas: dentistry, medicine, nursing, pharmacy, physical therapy, psychology/psychiatry, podiatry, and rehabilitative medicine. The other four discuss special issues: ethnic and minority health concerns, geriatric care and older women, medical ethics in geriatrics, and new reimbursement systems for medical care for the elderly. Most chapters are divided into separate sections for journals, books and book chapters, and major journal articles and reports. Specialists in the particular subject areas have selected the entries to provide a broad overview of the best resources in each area. The annotations are typically a paragraph in length and are clearly written. General bibliographies in gerontology often have sections on health from their particular perspectives, e.g., D.K. Harris's The Sociology of Aging, W.M. Edward's Gerontology, or D.L. Hawley's Women and Aging. This volume, however, fills the need for a specific and concise guide to the literature of geriatric health. Both author and subject indexes. Recommended for college and university libraries.”–
Choice“Resources for specific health care disciplines, such as dentistry, pharmacy, and physical therapy, are listed in one section. The other section covers broad issues such as minorities, ethics, and reimbursement systems. Each chapter has been compiled by a geriatric professional in the particular field.”–
Reference & Research Book News“What is catalogued in this annotated bibliography includes books, articles, annual reviews, journals, and even other bibliographies. Both author and subject indexes are provided. To the credit of the chapter and book compilers, the annotations which I looked at seemed quite factually accurate and unbiased. The dozen chapters cover topics such as dentistry, medicine, pharmacy, physical therapy, podiatry, rehabilitation, nursing, psychology, ethnic and minority issues, women, ethics, and reimbursement. . . This work should prove useful for students and professionals. . .”–
