Editorial Reviews

Review

From the Reviews of the Second Edition
This textbook is a thorough compilation of information and facts about the science of hearing....Various topics are introduced and developed carefully, with supplemental material to help students understand basic concepts relative to audition and hearing....The book is written in a scientific manner, with facts thoroughly documented and referenced...This small volume presents a giant accumulation of information.
-Jerry L. Northers in THE VOLTA REVIEW
The author has produced a very readable, up-to-date textbook which is understandable by students with little previous exposure to either hearing or research....I highly recommend this book to instructors who are faced with the difficult task of providing an overview of the field of hearing research to students with little background in the sciences and mathematics.
-Glenis R. Long, Purdue University, in the JOURNAL OF THE ACOUSTICAL SOCIETY OF AMERICA

4.0 out of 5 stars Fundamentals of Hearing - a good review - a good plae to start, January 21, 2009
This review is from: Fundamentals of Hearing, Third Edition: An Introduction (Hardcover)
Yost's "Fundamentals of Hearing" was recommended by a more advanced acoustics reference, as a basic reference. I was able to locate the edition third edition (1994) in a library. I found it to be very comprehensive. It answered many of many questions that other "comprehensive" acoustic references (including one published 2008)appeared to skip over. I plan to purchase a later edition of this book for my personal library, as there is a fourth edition (2000) and a fifth edition (2006.)

1.0 out of 5 stars poor basics and too much air, April 10, 2005
I got the book from a friend and iam very disappointed. The book covers what all the other books cover too, but the author uses three quarters of the letters only to fill space. The content could be much more compressed, also are the figures poorly made or just copied from papers. But a much larger problem is, that the author seems not to have any idea what he is talking about in terms of physics. The formulas that are given use wrong abbreviations, mixes that abbreviations (uses T and t for time only 5 cm apart) and gives the formulas not necessarly showing that he knows how to use them correctly. If you want a good book about the basics of hearing, buy another one.
