Fundamentals of Medical Physiology provides a concise, in-depth introduction by organ system to the principles of body function and uses emphasis on general models and clinical cases to foster mastery of these principles.

Special features include:

  • An emphasis on general models that underlie a number of recurring physiologic mechanisms -- for example, flow of substances and the factors that affect flow or energy formation and transformation -- to strengthen understanding
  • Use of clinical cases -- developed, refined, and tested in the classroom over the past decade -- to test mastery of physiologic concepts
  • Section-opening Patient Cases conclude with Some Things to Think About to help direct your study of the physiologic mechanisms of that organ system
  • Chapter Questions ask you to apply what you have learned in that chapter to building an understanding of the case
  • Answers to chapter questions allow you to check your understanding and direct further review
  • A comprehensive Case Analysis with cause-and-effect diagrams reviews in detail the physiology behind the case
  • Access via scratch-off code to all the cases in your book -- plus additional clinical cases -- with questions and answers and case analysis to enable convenient online review and testing

Specifically designed for the first- and second-year medical student, this innovative text -- ideal as a study aid for the USMLE -- provides the tools needed to learn and apply physiology to medical practice.

This book is a great companion to any medical school physiology course. Although certainly not a beginner's book, it has the depth that is required for a thorough understanding of the subject and great flow charts and graphs as well.

I got this book to fill in gaps from my pretty scattered/ useless med school syllabus for physiology. This book has all the information covered in lecture without providing too many extra details to sort through. The figures in the book are really nice and generally have good explanations with them. The reason I didn't give this product 5 stars is because I bought a new book to get the online student access. However, unlike many other med school textbooks, online access for this book only provides access to the clinical problem solving cases given at the end of each section. There are only 2 or 3 such cases available online that aren't in the book, so it's not really worth getting the new edition with the access code. Also, the questions posed in the book aren't very helpful for exams, so BRS will probably be needed in addition to this text to do well.

Overall, this text provides what I need to succeed in my physiology course and presents a sometimes difficult subject in good clarity.

Well organized sections, nice color pictures that explain fundamentals well. I bought it to review physiology but ended up getting one of the major text books, this one was too limited in scope for more advanced study. This is a fairly succinct review book and would be great for students in the health professions. The online access is extremely limited, there is no electronic copy of the book online, just a few questions and answers and access to a number of anatomy questions, pretty disappointing. They should have just put the case answers/discussions into the book itself for a more interesting educational experience.

This book is definitely geared toward medical students; as I can recall, there were case study problems inside explaining disorders and how things manifested in patients? It was a decent book, but the sections were so short.
